Steelers president Art Rooney II said there is no timetable to sign general manager Kevin Colbert to a contract extension, similar to what the Steelers did last week with coach Mike Tomlin. In the past, Colbert has been given an extension shortly after the team extended Tomlin.
“They’re not tied together in any sort of timing situation,” Rooney said. “I hate to speculate on contracts because they get done when they get done.”
Tomlin signed a two-year extension that runs through the 2020 season and keeps him among the highest-paid coaches in the NFL. New England’s Bill Belichick and Seattle’s Pete Carroll are believed to be the top-paid coaches and Tomlin, who has the fifth longest tenure with the same team, is right behind them.
But Rooney indicated the Steelers are hoping to sign defensive end Stephon Tuitt to a contract extension before the start of the season. It’s possible they could also work out a long-term deal for kicker Chris Boswell.
“We’re still open for business in terms of getting things done with players we’d like to get done,” Rooney said. “Stephon is one of them.”
