Food poisoning to blame for Jameson Taillon's scratched start

Jameson Taillon was scratched from his start Sunday against the Chicago Cubs with “flu-like symptoms.” Monday on Twitter, the pitcher explained the ordeal a little more ... vividly.

Ah. Yes. We’ve all been there. And one imagines the Cubs lineup induces that feeling in pitchers enough without the help of a rebellious meal, so missing his start is understandable amid this new information.

According to True Food Kitchen’s menu, the bowl in question contains “miso glazed sweet potato, turmeric, charred onion, snow pea, grilled portobello, avocado and hemp seed,” so we’ll likely never know which specific ingredient or ingredients foiled the second-year starter, who enters the All-Star break with a 2.73 ERA in 11 starts this season. If there’s a silver lining, though, it’s that Taillon seems to be a pretty healthy eater.

In the end, the Pirates didn’t miss Taillon much, scoring 10 first-inning runs for emergency starter Chad Kuhl in a 14-3 victory. And fortunately for him, he’ll get some time to recover, as the Pirates don’t start the unofficial second half of the season until a Friday home game against the St. Louis Cardinals at PNC Park.
