Pirates add Boscan to roster from Indianapolis

CHICAGO – The Pirates today added right-hander Wilfredo Boscan from Class AAA Indianapolis to the active roster to help a bullpen depleted by Friday’s 12-inning, 11-10 game.

Infielder Steve Lombardozzi was optioned to Indianapolis to make room on the active roster. The Pirates transferred right-hander Brandon Cumpton, who will miss the season because of Tommy John ligament replacement surgery, to the 60-day disabled list to make room on the 40-man roster.

Boscan was starting for Indianapolis and was scheduled to pitch today, meaning he has a full start’s worth of pitches at the ready. He had a 2.87 ERA in 31⅓ innings spanning six starts, striking out 20 and walking 11. He relies on his two-seam fastball and changeup.

Boscan has never pitched in the majors. The 25-year-old has pitched in the minors for the Texas Rangers, San Diego Padres and Boston Red Sox.
