Pirates' McCutchen sheds locks to benefit charity

BRADENTON, Fla. -- Andrew McCutchen cut off his trademark dreadlocks for charity.

The locks will be auctioned off on MLB.com and the proceeds will benefit Pirates Charities.

McCutchen released a 3-minute, 48-second YouTube video today, a scheduled off day for the Pirates, showing his haircut.

McCutchen has had his dreadlocks for years and felt now was the right time to let them go.

“Why? No big reason really. It’s just time for a new change and at the same time I can be helping a really good cause,” he said in the video.

McCutchen added: "All's well that ends well. New beginnings."

He explained part of his reasoning for wearing his hair in dreadlocks to the Post-Gazette in 2012.

“The perception of dreadlocks is pretty bad,” McCutchen said, “but I just wanted to wear them to show you don't have to be a bad person to wear them. It's OK to have it.”

McCutchen returned to the lineup Tuesday after missing 10 games because of what the Pirates called "lower-body soreness."
