Jason Mackey: Hello, folks. Welcome to my weekly chat. Finishing up a few things here, but we're going to get started at 1, if not a little before. Thanks, as always, for hanging out with us. Should be a lot to talk about.
Mace: Hello, there. Any insight on the futures of Jarry and DeSmith? They are like reliable backups with a future as starter, but it's hard to imagine either replacing Murray. Seems to me like one or both should be moved for money or talent. Thank you very much!
Jason Mackey: You're right -- neither will replace Murray. The Penguins really like DeSmith as a backup. He's low maintenance and better in a pinch. I think they view Jarry more as a starter. I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see them deal Jarry this summer, simply because he has nothing left to gain from being in the AHL and should be a valuable commodity for other teams.
OHIO412FAN: So, where do we go from here? A disappointment for sure. But, what do the Penguins need to do in order to hoist the Cup? To Do list?
Jason Mackey: I think you'll see them try to add a depth defenseman -- basically a No. 5. I think they'll tender their RFAs, probably sign Rust to a long-term deal. I think they'll gauge the market on guys like Hagelin, Brassard and Kessel. I think only Hagelin is likely to go. Maybe look at getting out from under Sheary and Hunwick, but that's going to be easy.
Bob: Looks like a Tampa - Nashville(Winnipeg) Stanley Cup final, eh? Think this is the year that the Lightning strikes twice for their Cup #2?
Jason Mackey: They would be my pick at this point. That's the funny thing about the Pens. I know everyone is bummed they lost, but there's no way they were getting through Tampa the way the Penguins and Lightning were both playing.
OHIO412FAN: I would hate to see Hagelin and/or Sheary go. Yes, they had down years in some ways and such, but they contribute in so many more ways people don’t realize. What are your thoughts? Who do they resign and throw away?
Jason Mackey: Well, they don't need to re-sign anyone aside from their RFAs. I think they'll keep those guys, although they don't really impact Sheary and Hagelin. Hagelin is more about business. He's going to walk after next season. Might as well get something for him. Sheary would open up a spot for Sprong, ZAR or Simon. Doesn't really do a ton a justify making $3 million.

OHIO412FAN: I get people are fed up with Tanger, but he was so productive offensively. Defense was a struggle, but I think he was still getting acclimated back from the neck injury. Penguins should absolutely keep him around for the long run. What are your thoughts on Tanger, and how do they improve the defensive corps?
Jason Mackey: He's going to be inconsistent. He's a risk-taker. People need to live with it, to some degree. This year was a bit much, I agree. If it changes, and he's better next season, we'll move past it. If not, honestly, I don't think there's much they can do. I doubt a team will take that contract, with his age and medical history and him playing the way he's played.
OHIO412FAN: I love how Sprong is getting the nod next year. His potential makes me thrilled. But, with ZAR, Simon, and Rowney under the weather production wise, what should they do with them? Honestly, I’d send Simon and Rowney to Wilkes Barre. They have serious potential, but like Sprong, they could use more grooming. ZAR is the one I’d keep on the main roster. Thoughts?
Jason Mackey: Well, Rowney is a UFA, and it's really doubtful he'll be back. Simon will get a chance. Sullivan -- you may have noticed -- loves him. Heck, Simon may be a part-owner of the club by the fall. .... Sprong's in. I think there's a job to be won by ZAR and Simon -- at least from how management makes it sound -- and the loser goes back to WBS.
Marvin: Never really understood breaking up a top line that was on fire (for Simon), especially in Game 6 when the Caps were missing two of their own top line players. Thought Sullivan should've loaded up his top line for that game, and that line alone might've gotten them through to Game 7 (all they needed was 2 goals in regulation). Think he'll regret not doing that for game 6?
Jason Mackey: I think there was more wrong with the Penguins than that, and I sort of understand why he did it: trying to spread his talent a little bit. What I didn't understand sticking with Simon as long as he did. I would've gone 59-87-72 ... 62-71-81 ... 43-19-17. ... 12-15-34 (used sparingly). But as I've noted, nobody asks for my opinion.
OHIO412FAN: According to my calculations, the Penguins will have roughly $10 million in cap space. Will they be expanding their overall space or working within the tight spaces? What do you see unfolding?
Jason Mackey: You've officially reached "more questions than my wife" territory ... they're going to spend to the cap, within about $1 million. There will be a lot in flux this summer because GMJR said there will be changes. But as sort of a blanket rule, they're going to spend all they're allowed to spend.
1: Is part of you happy the Pens are out of the Playoffs? More time to spend with family and friends?
Jason Mackey: It's mixed. In our business, the coolest stuff you get to do happens late in the playoffs. So in that sense, it sucks. But, yes, it is nice seeing my family and getting to be a normal human again. Not to sound like Matt Murray too much here, but I honestly don't care all that much. Either one, I'm good. Not like I get to control anything.
Guest: Jason. Jason. Jason. I told you back before the season started that Las Vegas was gonna be good and you didn't believe me. You dissed me in this chat. Admit it...you were WRONG!!!
Jason Mackey: I would've never dissed you, first off. But yeah, I didn't think Vegas would do this. I'm hardly alone.
Guest: Who wins the cup? I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say Winnipeg. Thoughts?
Jason Mackey: I'm going with Tampa.
Guest: Jason, ever since the Pens were eliminated I've been listening to Brokedown Palace by the Dead on repeat. You know it is probably the most choice sad nugg to play from the Dead. Do you feel it captures Pens fans emotions and is it the best sad Dead song?
Jason Mackey: Agree there. I'm not sure I could listen to it right now because of my dad. I'd be a bundle of tears.
Guest: Mackey, thanks for the good times this season. Will you be back on the Pens beat next season?
Jason Mackey: Unless the Post-Gazette decides to get rid of me, yes. I have no plans to go anywhere.
Guest: Why are all the fans so down on K. Letang? What gives?
Jason Mackey: He was wildly inconsistent this season. It's gotta be tough as a fan to see what he looks like when he's on, then have that disappear with no real rhyme or reason.
Guest: Who do the Pens take in the draft? Is there a next Gretzsky in this draft class?
Jason Mackey: It's too early, and they pick too late, to say exactly who they're going to pick. I'm willing to bet the first choice is a defenseman, though. There ain't much of them in the pipeline, believe it or not.
rich: It looked to me that the Caps played an aggressive neutral zone trap. The Pens tried to force the issue with feeble attempts to skate the puck in or pass it cross ice only to give it away. There were no adjustments(dump and chase) made. Thankful for all the success of this organization.
Jason Mackey: Rich, Washington did a couple different things. They even slid into a 1-4 at times. But honestly, I don't think Sullivan got out-coached. His team was tired. It had played 307 games in three years. That's crazy. Plus, the Capitals are good. It's not always about adjustments. They're part, sure, but there's more you're going to want to consider.
Connor Glunt: Do you think Dumoulin will still be paired with Letang next year? Dumoulin becoming more of an offensive threat during the postseason is great for him, but Letang almost needs a stay-at-home defenseman to clean up his mistakes.
Jason Mackey: I don't think so. I think they mesh well -- when Letang is going. Sullivan really likes it, too. Maatta/Letang wasn't great. I suppose if they add a guy who fits, sure, but I know Letang likes his partner to jump up into the play too, to not be an anchor. Dumoulin honestly complements Letang quite well.
PENS FANS: Jason, what a long strange trip it has been with the team shining on these last two seasons like a crazy diamond. What word or phrase best sums up the Penguins from 2015-2018?
Jason Mackey: Dark star crashes, pouring its light into ashes.
Reason tatters, the forces tear loose from the axis.
Searchlight casting for faults in the clouds of delusion.
Shall we go, you and I while we can
PGH : What was the name of the movie you were in that takes place at a Pens game? An action movie of some type.
Jason Mackey: Sudden Death. Wasn't me. 'Twas my dad.
123456: What does this team need to do to make it back to the Finals next year? What additions/subtractions can be made?
Jason Mackey: I wouldn't make a ton, quite honestly. I think they need more depth on defense. They need Letang to more consistently be Letang. They need Kessel and Brassard to produce. I'd probably look at moving Hagelin. Probably try with Hunwick and Sheary, too. But other than that, the pieces are there; they just have to play better.
Dean : Hi Jason............thank you for taking my question..........since the Penguins traded one of their better goalie prospects to the Senators for Brassard..............what is the list of Goalies in the organization now.....I hear they still have a good list of Goalies.
Jason Mackey: It's basically Murray-DeSmith-Jarry as far as names you need to know. Alex D'Orio is in junior and still a few years away.
usa 1: Is Mickey Hart the member of the Dead who is most UNDERRATED? When you listen to his drumming you have to think of the rhythm of nature and the harmony of life. I don't know that any other Dead drummer ever had that. Also, how insane would it be to be able to hear a Dead jam session, but with Brian Jones on drums? I can't even imagine. Thanks, Jason!
Jason Mackey: Underrated for me was Pigpen. I love the bluesier stuff.
ned: When you hear today's music and some of the folksier groups like Train or Florida/Georgia Line, do you ever think how far music has come and that these groups (with their followings and craftsmanship) are the modern day versions of The Grateful Dead? It is really cool to think when I see Train or FGL in person that I am witnessing the kind of music I wish I could have seen had I been alive in the 1960s. I'd love to hear your thoughts and thanks for the Pens coverage - HAVE A GREAT SUMMER!!!
Jason Mackey: I don't hear the bands you mentioned, and I'm thankful every day for that.
.: What the heck are you gonna do now that the season is over? Also, does Nashville look a little spent to you? I don't think they have the spunk they had last season.
Jason Mackey: I can't say I've watched enough to say something like that. I think tonight is going to be exciting. ... I'm going to take some time off, but you know the NHL offseason. We have the draft, free agency, development camp ... there will be plenty to keep me busy.
!!!: YOU RULE, MACKEY! THANKS FOR THE GREAT SEASON!!!!
Jason Mackey: Don't know about that first point, but thank you for reading and the kind words. You're welcome.
HB: I find it ironic that the caps added depth defensemen at the deadline like the pens usually do and the pens added a big fish like the caps do and this time the caps finally beat us.
Jason Mackey: I do, too. I asked Trotz about that and gave a similar answer. Doesn't always have to be the marquee player.
HB: Do you think the comments about sprong are true?
Jason Mackey: Oh, yeah. The GM wants to see him in the lineup. I think the coach is a little hesitant, but the GM said what he did for a reason, believe me. Sprong will be in the lineup. Or, I guess if Jim gets a really good trade offer, I suppose he'd listen.
Guest: Do you think there might be some contention between Rutherford and Sullivan over player usage this season; such as, who played and who should have been playing?
Jason Mackey: My sense is I don't think Rutherford was thrilled Phil kept playing when he was hurt. He has long been a proponent of using the regular season to get ready for the playoffs. The streak is important to Phil, and Sullivan went along with it. I think that's what irritated Jim. Again, this is just my guess. No other usage issues, I don't think.
HB: What do you think will be the biggest change on the team when the season starts next year.
Jason Mackey: Maybe Hagelin, Hunwick. Neither are huge changes. Maybe Sheary. They'll add Sprong. I think they'll listen on Kessel and Brassard, but I don't think they're dead set on doing anything. It would have to knock their socks off.
Avi: Why do you believe the decline in Sheary's play?
Jason Mackey: I think he got what he did in large part because of Crosby. If you remove Sheary from Crosby's line -- even last year -- the production went with it. I think the Penguins believe he can produce away from Sid, but so far it hasn't happened.
Avi: I meant to add to the Sheary question - It seems his brain and body are not in sync with one another
Jason Mackey: I think some of that is him pressing. He also falls down a lot, which has been a point of contention with him.
rich: Geno was minus seven and Phil minus five. As they do have a positive track record together, do you think Sullivan should have played them on the same line sooner.
Jason Mackey: I would've done it just to get Phil going. Give him what he wants and hope he responds by helping the team.
Avi: Why didn't Sullivan stack the lines in Game 6, especially in the 3rd and OT? Since they had 1 goal, wouldn't it have been advisable to put Brassard or Sheahan or even Malkin with Crosby?
Jason Mackey: Sullivan has never gone with 87 and 71 together. He kept Brassard down low because Brassard was hurt and not terribly effective. He wanted to try and keep Sheahan on the third line to give them multiple scoring threats. Obviously that backfired because Simon wasn't very good up on the top line.
Avi: Who do you think they sign, let go, and trade before the start of the new season?
Jason Mackey: I think they sign their RFAs, extend Rust and try to trade Hagelin, Hunwick and Sheary.
Avi: During the Caps/Pens series last year, I asked you what you thought of Tom Wilson and you responded that he played between the lines, wasnt a dirty player, and the Pens would be happy to have him. What are your thoughts now?
Jason Mackey: I don't remember responding that way, but OK. I think Wilson toes the line of legality and often oversteps. I was glad to see the NHL did what it did.
OHIO412FAN: I don’t get why people are counting out the Penguins from winning more cups in the future. They have a bright future. With the current regime and era we are in now, why wouldn’t the Penguins host more parades?
Jason Mackey: Championship window is still very much open, if you ask me.
OHIO412FAN: I’m all for resigning Rust, Sheahan, Oleksiak, Sprong, Kuhlknackl, and Jarry. What are your thoughts on that?
Jason Mackey: I agree with you. And I think they will.
OHIO412FAN: What will the Penguins be looking for in trade estate if they do decide to go that route?
Jason Mackey: A depth D. Maybe some freed up cap space for Rust or Guentzel extensions.
OHIO412FAN: Scouting the FA market, do you see any particular players the Penguins making a run at? Ian Cole?
Jason Mackey: He won't come back here. Someone else will pay him big bucks. Someone like Calvin De Haan or John Moore could make sense for that depth guy. I still like Grabner if they can afford him, but they probably don't need him. Kovalchuk jumps out, but I don't know if that's the right move.
guest: Thanks so much for letting us Pens fans vent one last time! For some reason I am really having a hard time getting over this loss. Between loosing to the hated Capitals and having to now hear about that, knowing the games they lost were mostly due to self inflicted mistakes and most of all knowing they lost out on the chance to make history which they will probably never get again. This is tough! Maybe I will go stand on Grant and pretend the parade is coming to help :)
Jason Mackey: My pleasure. Thanks for participating. Please don't stand on Grant St., waiting for a parade.
guest: I was really disappointed in how they played the last game. Hearing the announcers say there was no energy on the bench was disappointing to hear. Do you feel they kind of gave up after game 5 loss?
Jason Mackey: No, I don't. But I do think they were dog tired. There's no shame in that, right? They played a ton of hockey. They're human.
Dave: What did you think of GMJR saying Kessel's injuries caught up with him, and HCMS basically throwing cold water all over that and making sure everyone knew the injuries weren't serious? Is there something up between Sullivan and Kessel? Is this the fallout from losing Tocchet?
Jason Mackey: Not at all. I think Jim was annoyed that Phil was allowed to keep playing and continue his Ironman streak. I think Sullivan was annoyed that Phil didn't play better through whatever he was playing with. Basically different degrees at being annoyed with Kessel.
Frank: Do you attribute any significance to the presence of Ryan Reaves coinciding with the Penguins relatively long period of being injury-fee the season'?
Jason Mackey: No, I don't. I think they were due a run of good health. I thought Reaves brought some stuff, but he's not injury insurance. It's still a violent game, even if he's on your team.
Mike: How do the Pens make room for Sprong next year? Or is this another case of GMJR talking up a young player in hopes of trading him, aka the Pouliot Gambit?
Jason Mackey: I think this is different than Pouliot, although it's interesting you bring that up. In this case, this is Rutherford saying something is going to happen. Historically, when he's done that, it has happened. He's not pumping up Sprong's offseason or anything like that. He's telling what he's going to do. That's where I see the biggest difference.
BGB: What do you make of the idea of trying Brassard on the wing? I'm of the belief that he was really hurt, and that we didn't see what he was truly capable of after that late season injury. I hope they give him the chance to be the 3rd C next season.
Jason Mackey: I'm not buying it. If it was such an option this season, why didn't they try it? I think it's lip service. He needs to get healthy, No. 1. He also needs a full year with the Penguins. If he does that, and gets good lineups, he'll be just fine.
Rodney Bish: I think the Penguins should trade Conner Sherry. Daniel Spring can be ready to take his place. What do you think Jason
Jason Mackey: Wanting to and being able to are two completely different things. Sprong also doesn't play the left side.
Robin: Is it too soon to call the Brassard trade a bust? I say yes, only because they have him for another season and they didn't get a healthy version of him when it counted most. But I'm curious if you think they would have been better off trading for Evander Kane, given the total lack of secondary scoring in the playoffs.
Jason Mackey: No way on Kane. Wouldn't have fit within their team culture, in my opinion. And, yes, I think it is too soon to say anything about the Brassard trade. Give him until halfway through next season. If it's the same, then I think it's fair. But it's too soon right now.
Hank: I won't mention where I read it, but I read that the Ryan Reaves trade came from above Sullivan/GMJR's heads. Does that mean the directive came from Mario? And does that rank as one of the worst trades the Pens have made in a long time? I liked Reaves but he never was a fit, and if they were going to trade their 1st they could've tried for a D man or something of the sort.
Jason Mackey: Hi Hank. I would prefer you did mention it, honestly. Otherwise I'm responding to something baseless. It's OK if it's the Trib/Athletic/DK. They all do good work and get stories, too. ... From what I know, the trade started with GMJR. But Mario and others fully endorsed doing it.
Nan: I think what annoys me the most about this past offseason was that the money used on Reaves/Hunwick could have been put towards either Kunitz, Daley, or Hainsey. Any of them would have been nice to have in the playoffs, no?
Jason Mackey: They would have, yes. But you weren't going to match the three-year deals Hainsey and Daley got. Not at their age. Kunitz was a tough one, but I think the Penguins hoped they would get Cullen and let Kunitz go. When Cullen went to Minnesota, Kunitz was gone.
Jasper: Adidas and the NHL are supposed to bring back 3rd jerseys next year. Have you heard anything about what the Pens might use? I'm hoping they bring back the diagonal PITTSBURGH uni, or even bring back the robo-Penguin. And if you haven't heard anything concrete, what would you like to see them do for a 3rd jersey?
Jason Mackey: I have not heard anything concrete, but I would love to see that jersey. That, too, would be my top choice.
HB: What happened to sams mailbag? Was he not sent enough questions? And that’s why it disappeared
Jason Mackey: He's doing one this week. I don't know, honestly. You should ask him. Better yet, email him a question: SWerner@post-gazette.com.
Buck: Do you have a guess as to what was up with Kessel? Was he hurt or did he just check out?
Jason Mackey: I think he was hurt. Rib/oblique/wrist/elbow something. No way that guy was fully healthy. It's just a matter of how severe it was. Wish he would've talked yesterday because I think a lot of fans deserve that answer.
Rene Corbet #9: If Sheary was to be moved. What would a return for him look like?
Jason Mackey: Wouldn't be much, I wouldn't think. The return would be someone else taking that contract.
jim from MI: Any chance we sign Reaves when available?
Jason Mackey: No, I don't think so. I don't think he would want to come here.
jim from MI: Predictions on who goes this off season?
Jason Mackey: I'd say Hagelin, Hunwick, Jarry and maybe Sheary. Definitely not Letang. Suppose Kessel for the right offer, but I don't get the sense it's a priority.
Smith: I think trading Hagelin would be a huge mistake, personally. His speed is so dangerous and he's such a good PK.
Jason Mackey: Fair points. I think it's more looking at the year after, when he would walk away for nothing. They have plenty of wings who can come in and play and kill penalties.
Pete: Jason, why didn't any Pittsburgh media report that Simon is actually Mike Sullivan's son?
Jason Mackey: This is a good one. I liked Starkey's line today about Sullivan's penthouse.
just me: Any idea on how much $ Pens have in regard to free agency or to early to tell?
Jason Mackey: It's too early to tell. I'm sorry.
just me: I realize hind site is 20-20 but do you think think the pens would of went further without the trades of Cole, Reaves etc?
Jason Mackey: Probably not, honestly. They didn't get enough secondary scoring. If anything, they were better off in that department by losing Cole and Reaves. I don't think the trades made a huge difference, other than Brassard not producing much. That wasn't good.
Lord of Carson: Jason. At this juncture ZAR and Simon seem to be borderline NHL players at best. TK and Rowney are offensive black holes. Sheary disappears come playoff time. This group doesnt seem to be the filler necessary for a Cup contender. Is there someone you think has another level?
Jason Mackey: The first two, for sure. I think Sheary can be better. Rowney won't be on the team next year. TK is what he is. ... But if you have two other decent offensive players on your fourth line, TK isn't a liability.
Lord of Carson: JR was on fire!. Since the last Cup season we saw the weird Reeves epiphany, Niemi, Hunwick, and a so so trade deadline at best. Is it fair to say he has had a bit of a reversion to the means and has cooled off?
Jason Mackey: He didn't have a great summer last year, I know that. I wouldn't say he's cooled off because then you're discounted the Sheahan and Oleksiak deals, which were really good. And I think it's too soon to properly judge Brassard. Yeah, it stinks he didn't produce in the playoffs. But what if he turns out like James Neal? We're not going to be saying it's a mistake then.
Jason Mackey: Green, de Haan, Cole and Moore are probably the top ones. I like de Haan and Moore. Cheap and basic. Green too risky, unless he's really cheap, but they don't need more of that style. Cole won't come here.
Brandon: What are some of the bigger names in the free agent pool for defenseman this year? I know Karlsson, and Carlson. Personally I do not see the benefit of Letangs play on the top line and could be a John Carlson away from an amazing D group.
Jason Mackey: Got this answered above.
AR: Hi Jason, personally I think the biggest undisclosed injury was not to 81 or 19 but to Geno, he just looked bad after he returned (slow, tired) no jump, no explosion, and that i think was the difference. When he missed game 2 of caps series i though HCMS was using as precaution and playing with house money after winning game 1, but obviously that wasnt the case, and pens couldnt overcome
Jason Mackey: Fair point. Geno's injury was a knee, but we don't know exactly what it involved. But yeah, he didn't look like himself at all. Especially not compared to what we saw in January and February out of him.
AR: Another offseason, another search for Sid's RW. We have his RW, his name is Horny, just let them play and leave them alone. That was a big mistake to break up that line
Jason Mackey: I don't think that's a search at all this offseason. They have Sprong, Hornqvist and Kessel. Plus Rust. They're more than set at RW.
Hank: I live in California and wore my Pens jersey to the theater to see Sudden Death. Excellent cinema.
Jason Mackey: Good to hear, Hank.
AR: Does the Pens organization actually think Murray's glove hand is an issue or not?
Jason Mackey: No, they don't. That's a fan thing. Guys shoot there because he's tall, and that's one of the few areas of open space. Murray wasn't his best self this year. That's as much of an issue as anything. Yes, it needs work, but it's hardly the world-ending problem many make it out to be.
Vince : Any free agents out there at the top of your wish list jason ?
Jason Mackey: Not really. Mentioned the two possible D men. Still like Grabner, although he's probably going to make as much as Hagelin -- I.e. sideways move. I think the best thing they can do is clear space and skew younger.
usa 1: But what about hearing Brian Jones sit in with The Dead? How great would that have been?
Jason Mackey: Very great. Awesome.
Daniel Sprong: Do you believe Rutherford that I will be on the team next year? Mark Madden thinks JR might be talking me up in order to trade me, like Pouliot. And, Sullivan didn't say anything about me.
Jason Mackey: Well, Sullivan wasn't asked about you, Daniel. We had other things for Mike. But yes, I think he was serious, and I think you will be on the team next year. I think the GM likes you a lot. The coach maybe not so much.
Cosmo K: Who do you think is the front runner for playoff MVP? Connect Smythe is it? Flower, OV?
Jason Mackey: Conn Smythe. And to me, right now, it's Fleury.
Steve: Good afternoon Jason, I know the Pens are tight lip about the injuries they had but do you have information on the specifics on what was bothering guys like Kessel and Malkin?
Jason Mackey: Good afternoon, Steve. Sorry, no I don't. Neither was available to us yesterday at clean-out day, and my back-channel efforts have not yet uncovered anything.
AR: What are the particular strength of Simon that the coaching staff saw and we should look for in order to appreciate him? Usually these things are obvious to someone who watches a lot of hockey but not here.
Jason Mackey: He's smart. Can skate. Pretty good shot. Has functioned well with Crosby before. Should he have gotten as much slack as he did? No. But when he's going, those are some of Simon's best traits.
Guest: What band do you have a problem with - Train or Florida Georgia Line? Have you ever heard their live stuff? They jam long and great like the Dead did. Check it out!
Jason Mackey: Not a fan of either, sorry. I've heard them both.
Schurr: Is Brassard GMJR's Iginla?
Jason Mackey: Could be, but I think it's way too early to tell on that one. It's hardly the first time a deadline acquisition didn't have the desired impact. Everyone on the planet praised that trade when it happened. Brassard was hurt. Iginla was mostly healthy. Big difference.
Lord of Carson: Hey jason, What do u think actually is Letang's issue at heart? From a fans perspective it seems we have waited forever for his game to mature and become savvy. I am doubting that ever happens.
Jason Mackey: I think it's feel. I think mentally he was out of whack a little this season. Because they asked him to tweak his game. Because of his neck. Because he struggled early. He looked to me like a guy who was wrapped around the axle. Could use the offseason to chill out.
Jim: I think the player Rutherford needs to trade most this summer is Simon, so Sullivan won't get to play him on the first line. I'm 100% serious about this.
Jason Mackey: What do you think Jim would get for Simon? My guess would be not much.
Guest: Mackey, who is the greatest sports writer of all time? And don't say Ed Bouchette just cuz he is the Godfather of Pittsburgh Sports!!!!
Jason Mackey: My personal favorite is Barry Svrluga from The Washington Post.
Jason Mackey: I also like Bruce Arthur from the Toronto Star a lot.
Guest: Do you have an all-time favorite athlete you've rooted for?
Jason Mackey: Have always been a big Drew Brees fan. Peyton Manning, too.
Cosmo K: Should big Ben pull a Mario and have Rudolph move into his place? Worked out well for guins...
Jason Mackey: Yeah, I'm sure that wouldn't get awkward at all. Ben would give him a walk-in closest. As a bedroom.
Lord of Carson: Jason, Is it fair to ask that in trading Hagelin , the Pens would continue to lose what was their calling card, overwhelming speed?
Jason Mackey: Not if they adequately replace it. Thomas Di Pauli comes to mind. He can fly. I'm not saying that's going to happen or should happen, but they do have other fast places. Plus, speed is also a system thing, not how fast they move their skates.
789: I think PigPen is underrated, sure, but a lot of folks think he is overrated because he died so young. I'll give you a crazy idea - Jerry Garcia is the most underrated Dead member. Most people don't even know that he fronted the band, which is pretty heavily underrating a fella if you ask me?
Jason Mackey: Good line. But I do agree with you. I think some people don't realize how good of a guitar player Jerry was in his prime.
Rob: It seemed Ovie really upped his game this series. I don't remember him being so active in previous years.
Jason Mackey: Agree with you. I thought Ovechkin was very good.
AR: Can we just say it: Doumolin is the Pens best defenseman and he's an elite NHL defenseman. I'm sick of him always being called "solid".
Jason Mackey: He was these playoffs, but overall Letang has the highest ceiling. And it ain't close.
Lord of Carson: JR was on fire. Since the last Cup win we saw the weird Reeves epiphany, Hunwick, Niemi, and a so so trade deadline. Is it fair to say he has had a bit of a reversion to the means and cooled off?
Jason Mackey: Got this before, but I don't think so. You have Sheahan and Oleksiak. Those were solid. Incomplete right now on Brassard.
Guest: Why the diss on Train, Mackey? They do a lot of good charity work in the Southern USA.
Jason Mackey: Good for them, but I don't like their music. That is legal.
team: Hey Mackey, Florida-Georgia Line is - AND ALWAYS WILL BE - my favorite band. We don't diss you for liking The Dead, and PFISH, etc. Even though those bands don't even have hits on the radio!
Jason Mackey: You could, though. I wouldn't be offended.
Jim: You just said something telling about Kessel: "Give him what he wants and hope he responds." Are you saying Kessel wasn't happy without Malkin? Was he pouting?
Jason Mackey: Yeah, I don't think he was thrilled with his linemates.
Jason Mackey: Not saying it was pouting, but he wanted to be playing with Malkin.
Guest: Could Teemu Sellani still play? He seems to be in good shape still.
Jason Mackey: Looks that way, huh?
Lord of Carson: ZAR and Simon seem to be borderline NHL players at best this juncture. TK ( weird love affair and all the Pens seem to have) and Rowney are offensive black holes. Sheary just doesnt fit into tighter checking of playoffs. These guys dont seem to be the filler on a Cup contender. Is there someone u think has another level?
Jason Mackey: The first two, for sure. I think Sheary can be better. Rowney won't be on the team next year. TK is what he is. ... But if you have two other decent offensive players on your fourth line, TK isn't a liability.
AP: Where do you put sprong next season? On a line with sid or geno? Or on the third line and hope he can be a driving force on that line like kessel has done previously.
Jason Mackey: I think you tinker. I'd start with Sid and work from there. Maybe start Hornqvist with Malkin and Kessel with Brassard and try to let that chemistry build. I could honestly see Sprong playing with Crosby, Malkin or Brassard.
Guest: What do you think about making the goalies wear less padding in order to increase NHL scoring? I know the commish is open to the idea, specifically making the leg pads smaller. Same protection, but less space.
Jason Mackey: I love it. I think they wear too much equipment. Murray wouldn't like hearing that, but it's my personal opinion. I think it makes a lot of sense, as long as you're not sacrificing safety. In this case, you wouldn't be.
///: When will the NHL wake up and realize that Phoenix doesn't deserve a team and move them Coyotes up to Quebec City where they belong? When ?
Jason Mackey: Phoenix doesn't have a team. Glendale has a team. That's problem No. 1. But, yeah, Quebec City should have one, whether it's the Coyotes, Carolina or Florida. My goodness is that building great. Town's amazing. Should have an NHL team.
AR: this issue with Sprong not playing responsible defense... has anyone watched Phil Kessel play? Since when does that matter if you produce offensively? He cannot possibly be any worse
Jason Mackey: When you win 20 in the show you can let the fungus grow on your shower shoes. But until you win 20 in the show, it means you're a slob.
PA: How many seasons will the Pens have Crosby AND Malkin?
Jason Mackey: Are we expecting a precise answer here? There's no danger of the 87/71 Era ending any time soon.
Rob: If the current Penguins roster were a high school year book who would get the Least Likely to Succeed tag?
Jason Mackey: Carter Rowney, if we're measuring it by offense.
hockey: If Jerry Garcia were alive today, would he be one of these corporate sellouts who appear in iPhone commercials and try to sell us retirement plans or would he still be a top notch rocker who gives the finger to authority and rocks hard and loud every night? The Dead ruled, Mackey. You know it and I know it and they will always be the best rock band of all time. The Beatles are #2 and The Stones/Who are #3. Thanks for a great season, JM!
Jason Mackey: Jerry would probably be both. Awesome rocky but constantly surprising and funny. You're welcome. Thank you!
Schlomo: Kovalchuk? Kovalchuk??? Oh man now you've got my hopes up.
Jason Mackey: All I'm saying is intrigues me. That's it.
Rob: When is Guentzel due a contract?
Jason Mackey: Believe he's an RFA after next season.
Jeremy: When readers ask a version of "Why didn't this Penguin or that one play better?" I think the answer is that they couldn't. Washington played a very tight, disciplined series (a few dumb penalties aside) and they forced errors that the Pens weren't able to force Washington into. I don't know if it's possible for people like Crosby or Letang or Hagelin or Geno or Phil or Murray to care any more than they do about living up to their own expectations and ours. They played as hard as they could and came up short after an astounding run of effort, skill and luck. I look at this organization as an incredible example of commitment and the possibility for improvement, a genuine example of humanity at its best, within the limits of their discipline. I'd like to have a few days of my life where I was as good at my job as these people are at theirs. Events like Flower's homecoming make me hopeful about the human race. These people are amazing.
Jason Mackey: Thanks for your input, Jeremy, but let's let everyone have their opinions and ask questions how they see fit.
Hank: The Reaves nugget was in Josh Yohe's wrap up piece yesterday.
Jason Mackey: Gotcha. Thanks. To reiterate, I believe it was GMJR's idea, endorsed by everyone else.
TK: How many more years are left on Letang's contract?
Jason Mackey: Four.
dave: Sullivan and GMJR seemed to have different opinions on how badly Kessel was injured. What do you make of that?
Jason Mackey: I think the difference is this: Jim didn't want him playing late in the season. Sullivan wanted him to play through what was bugging him. They don't contradict each other. Both annoyed at Phil for different reasons.
AR: I like Justin Shultz, but man, he had so many opportunities to score a big goal for us and was stopped time and again. Unlike last year when he scored so many huge goals
Jason Mackey: I'm not going to blame this on Justin Schultz. I thought he was pretty solid this postseason. He's a defenseman. If you're counting on him to score big goals, you're already screwed.
Smith: I get your point of Hagelin walking for nothing next offseason, but should that matter that much to a team with Cup aspirations? They should be focusing year to year, in my opinion. The long view can wait a few years.
Jason Mackey: Very fair. It depends on the return. That's why I wrote about his second half the other day. If you get someone willing to pay a decent amount, you do it. If not, definitely don't force it.
Avi: I apologize if I got your Tom Wilson answer from last year incorrect. Hopefully, you arent offended :)
Jason Mackey: Never offended.
Chris V: Rust, Sheahan, Oleksiak, and Kuhnhackl are all due new contracts this offseason. Which of these guys do you see GMJR paying and which do you see him moving on from this offseason?
Jason Mackey: He'll tender all of them RFA deals. I think they'll probably do something long-term with Rust, maybe Sheahan.
Popa: Crazy stat: in 19 playoff games vs. Caps over 3 years, Penguins have scored more than 3 goals once. Maybe the "Pens own Holtby" narrative is officially dead, and never should have been started?
Jason Mackey: Yeah, I never understand why everyone got so attached to that. The numbers support it some, but it's not like he's been Sergei Bobrovsky against them.
Just wondering: Jason, you do an incredible job covering the Pens. My question is way couldn’t’t this team stop the odd man rushes all season.. It hampered them the entire season and in the playoffs. Why wasn’t this issue fixed long ago.
Jason Mackey: Thanks for the kind words. Good question: I feel like if I had the answer to that, I'd bottle it and sell it to Sully. It's like asking why can't the Pirates just hit .400 all the time. The other team gets paid, too.
Rob: I think if they had two healthy top lines they would have beaten the Caps.I agree with you in that I don't think the Pens would have beat Tampa. I think they really need to find a steady winger opposite Guentzel if it is not Hornqvist.
Jason Mackey: Absolutely agree, Rob. I think it could be Sprong. Hornqvist is a decent fit, too. But they didn't get enough from their depth guys.
dave: If Kessel didn't have the consecutive games streak going, do you think they would have sat him out at some point?
Jason Mackey: Oh, absolutely.
Guest: Jason, just joining and don’t know if this was asked, but is there a problem between Sullivan and Kessel and do you really think they would trade a 90-Point winger?
Jason Mackey: No, I don't think there was a problem between Phil and anyone. But yes, I do think they would consider it, for the right offer given his age, contract situation and the fact that they want Daniel Sprong to play a key role on this team.
PensSpeed: Hello Jason, love your articles!
All other teams have caught up with Pens about speed... what can Pens do to get back on track to get faster on their D-Core, like Letang is not as fast as before, which why I'v found he has been caught up high often? And what's your thoughts about Avalanche?
Jason Mackey: Loved the move the Avalanche made this year. MacKinnon is awesome, but he needs some help. ... Their speed isn't that far off. They need to handle the puck better and get out of their own zone quicker. That would do wonders. I do think that issue is easily correctable.
me: I understand that Letang had a hard time coming back from the neck surgery, but many of his mistakes were mental, not physical.
Jason Mackey: Yes. But he was thinking entirely too much about entirely too much, in my opinion.
me: Penthouse residents - Simon.
Jason Mackey: Rowney and Ruhwedel have spent time.
ToddHH: We hear about Sprongs lack of 200 foot game and thats the reason he isnt in the lineup. But then we watch Sheary and well, u know. Is it fair for fans and likely Daniel to wonder what gives?
Jason Mackey: Absolutely. Could he be any worse than some of what we saw? I think that's a fair question.
guest: I want to route for Vegas to win but the downfall to that will be a year of hearing from people that we would have won if we kept Fleury and I would not want Murray to have to deal with hearing that constantly.
Jason Mackey: The Penguins made a smart business decision. That way of looking at it is revisionist history. Every other NHL team would've done the same thing.
me: Do you think it was unprofessional of Kessel to not do interviews after game 6 or during clean-out day?
Jason Mackey: Yes, I think he owed that to the fans. Has nothing to do with me personally. I still found plenty of stories. But all of you guys wondered what was up. You bought tickets and gear, invested your time. You deserve to have that question answered.
PensSpeed: Hello Jason, love your articles!
All other teams have figure out the advantage of Penguins of the last 2 seasons, they have caught up with the Pens speed. How could they become a faster team next year, by adding a speedier D-core? Letang has a lost a edge with his speed, and he won't get faster...
What's your thoughts about the future Colorado, they didn't win vs Preds, but the Avs are an entertaining in your face hockey style, it remembers me the young 2009 pens.
Jason Mackey: Got this earlier. I think they're closer than you think, honestly. Don't rule out Letang coming back gangbusters next year.
Guest: I think it would be a mistake to move on from Hagelin unless there’s a really speedy replacement who PKs and is great on the forecheck...Rust is the only other related player...Hags helps so much in the playoffs...even at the risk at losing him for nothing, the Pens should keep him thru next year. Sheary, however, is more expendable and not worth his contract
Jason Mackey: If that's the case, then I think they're going to have a tough time trading Sheary, no? I can see your line of thought with Hagelin, though.
Steve: What were your thoughts on the Marchand multiple licking incidents? If he was a Penguin player I would be so ashamed of his childish antics. He's a heck of a player but he doesn't seem like he's all there upstairs.
Jason Mackey: Yeah, that was really weird. I hope we're done with that.
Jim: What would Rutherford get for Simon? He'd get the assurance that Sullivan won't play him on the first line anymore, that's more than enough.
Jason Mackey: Ha. Good point. I think Simon will be a good player. I just don't think he needed that much slack on the top line.
JY: Who will win the Tampa Bay Washington series?
Jason Mackey: I think Tampa will win the whole thing.
Guest: Is the team worried at all about Murray and do they have plans to bring in a veteran goaltender? I think he missed have a mentor like MAF around....
Jason Mackey: No, I think it will be Murray and DeSmith next year. I think they view Murray as a franchise guy and rightfully so. His year had nothing to do with Fleury being gone.
Dominic Dumont: Hello Jason from Quebec city, love your articles! Would you love to travel in Quebec city for Pens matches somedays against Nordiques again? ^_~
The league has caught up with the speed of Pens, which was their advantage of the last two cups, I wonder if they could remediate to get faster, by adding speed in their D-Core? I've found Letang is not getting faster...
And I've watched some games of Colorado vs Preds in the 1st round, oh my! Avs have a young core playing a in your face style speedy hockey, it remembers me the baby pens of 2009!
Jason Mackey: Popular question today. I think the Penguins are faster than you give them credit for. Their lack of speed wasn't why they lost, in my opinion. They don't even have a lack of speed. Need more secondary scoring.
guest: do you think part of the problem with Brassard is he didn't fit into the lockerroom?
Jason Mackey: Not at all. The group loved him. He just didn't get it going on the ice.
Rob: When healthy Malkin and Kessel play phenomenal hockey together. If they had stayed healthy the two top lines (59-87-72, 81-71-62) were unstoppable
Jason Mackey: That's the route I would've gone as well, but I don't coach the team.
Rob: I don't remember where I heard it, may have been the NHL on Sirius, but what do you think about the idea of making the long change during the 1st and 3rd period to increase scoring?
Jason Mackey: I don't like messing with hockey convention like that. I'd rather keep the changes the same.
Guest: Enjoyed the chat Jason, Thanks!!!
Jason Mackey: Thank you!
Mark: Is there any chance the Penguins move a player making over 4 million per year this off season? I feel like a big move may be coming (not 87 or 71 though).
Jason Mackey: I think they will entertain it, but I don't think it's likely. The only one who would fit that category would be Kessel. Would have to be a really good offer.
me: Do you think Kessel is starting to wear out his welcome with the Pens
Jason Mackey: No, I don't. I just think they want him to get healthy.
AP: Do you think GMJR will take a stab at acquiring Erik Karlsson or are we not even in the ball park to make an offer? In the same thought I know they wouldnt do this because of money but say you could get him for a deal based around Letang do you try to make it work?
Jason Mackey: We're not in the ballpark -- heck, zip code -- to make that kind of offer. I don't think Ottawa would do it for what the Penguins are peddling.
guest: I don't understand why he kept Simon on the first line and didn't try Sheary there. Do you think the players were not happy with seeing Simon get such a prominent role at such an important time?
Jason Mackey: Possibly. I didn't understand it as well. But I don't think it infuriated them or anything like that.
Mark: What do you think the Penguins will be rated in EA Sports NHL 19?
Jason Mackey: Should still be one of the best.
Jill: Coach was very tight-lipped on injuries, but was Olli Matta hurt in the playoffs. Heard he wasn't playing in WC but that may just be for a full rest? Also Hagelin was driven to and from. Still having concussion issues. Thanks, Jason. You do a wonderful job!
Jason Mackey: Thanks, Jill. All the guys not playing in the WC is for full rest. They need it. Hagelin didn't have a concussion. He always rides with Hornqvist.
thanks: Will these chats continue now that the season is over?
Jason Mackey: Some. But not until around draft time. I'm going to take a few weeks off.
Jason Mackey: OK, folks. That does it. Thanks for hanging out. Last one of these for awhile. As always, appreciate the great questions and you guys making this what it is. Gonna take a few weeks. Will be back with more closer to the draft. Thanks!
Guest: Does Sullivan ever get asked about his lineup decisions like Simon on the first line, and if so, how does he respond?
Jason Mackey: Oh, a few more. Basically he says the coaching staff talks before and after every game about line combinations, and they do what they think gives the team the best chance to win.
Mark: This may sound crazy....but will Buffalo have a chance at being a playoff team anytime soon?
Jason Mackey: I don't think so, sorry. They're a long way off right now.
