Penguins will display trophies Downtown before home opener

A collection of NHL trophies — including the Stanley Cup — will be on public display Downtown from noon to 5 p.m. today before the Pittsburgh Penguins’ home opener this evening at PPG Paints Arena.

The display at the City-County Building portico on Grant Street will include the Prince of Wales, Conn Smythe and General Manager of the Year trophies, according to a joint announcement Wednesday from Mayor Bill Peduto and the Penguins.

Fans can line up beginning at 9 a.m. to take their own photos with the trophies, Mr. Peduto’s office said. A photographer will not be provided.

“This is the perfect way to cap off the ‘Summer with Stanley’ and celebrate the Penguins as they begin the 2016-17 NHL season,” Mr. Peduto said in a statement. Team CEO David Morehouse thanked the mayor and his staff “for giving fans the chance to see the Stanley Cup” at city hall.

Although he's back practicing with the Penguins, Bryan Rust will not play Thursday.

The Penguins won the Cup last season for the fourth time, besting the San Jose Sharks in the finals in June.

Also Wednesday, Mr. Peduto’s office announced a raffle for a Penguins captain’s jersey autographed by Sidney Crosby. San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo wore the jersey for a social media photo as part of losing a bet with Mr. Peduto.

Proceeds from the raffle will benefit the Hill House Association and the Veterans Leadership Program of Western Pennsylvania — charities picked by Mr. Peduto. The 2,500 raffle tickets are priced at $20 apiece and are limited to one per customer. Fans can register at http://bidpal.net/peduto starting at 9 a.m. today. A winning ticket will be drawn by 3 p.m.
