Three pro basketball bosses have ties to Pittsburgh

Steve Swetoha, Len Komoroski and Mike Levy are all bosses with either NBA or D-League teams, and all three have ties to Pittsburgh high schools, Duquesne University and the old Civic Arena. They even knew each other and worked together at times.

All three are now either presidents or CEOs of their teams – Komoroski with the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers; Swetoha with the Greensboro Swarm, which will start play next season in the D-League (minor league of the NBA); Levy with the Canton Charge, the Cleveland Cavaliers’ D-League affiliate.

Komoroski and Swetoha are graduates of North Catholic High School while Levy attended Peabody. All three went to Duquesne University, either for their undergraduate or master’s degree. In the early to mid 1980s, they were crossing paths regularly with either jobs or internships. Komoroski worked for the Pittsburgh Spirit indoor soccer team and the Penguins, while Levy also worked for the Spirit. Swetoha worked for the Penguins.

Who knew they would one day rise in front offices of professional basketball.

“I know it’s an old cliche that Western Pennsylvania is known for football quarterbacks,” said Swetoha. “This may sound crazy, but there have been some good basketball people coming out of that area, too. People have gone on to bigger and better things. It’s great to say we’re all from there.”
