The column by Connie Schultz, “America’s Diaper Dilemma” (July 26), masterfully outlined the many aspects of diaper need in our country and the challenges to families, as well. There is an estimated 77,000 diaper shortfall in Allegheny County alone.
As Ms. Schultz points out, the crisis stretches way beyond diapers. Regardless of your point of view — and she related those of supporters and dissenters — at the Western Pennsylvania Diaper Bank we believe the “blessing is in the diaper.” The child is at the heart of our efforts to prevent illness, additional parental stress and loss of day care and employment due to a lack of diapers.
While a diaper bank can’t solve all the related issues of diaper insufficiency, we hope in some small way to help break the cycle of need for those working hard to raise a family as healthy and happy as our own.
This is a crisis we can solve! We call upon companies, churches, schools and anyone interested in joining us to visit our website (westernpennsylvaniadiaperbank.org) for ways to help — the simplest being to host a diaper drive.
