The energy renaissance benefits the middle class

The energy renaissance benefits the middle class

In the Jan. 28 letter “When Will Consol’s Findlay Gas Drilling End?” a resident of Findlay Township seems to acknowledge that Consol Energy has remained in compliance with local ordinances governing its drilling operations at Pittsburgh International Airport, yet still appears to be opposed to this important regional project.

It strikes me that such complaints are emblematic of the very vocal minority in this region, and frankly all over our country, who choose to ignore the tremendous benefits that are lifting up the middle class because of new shale discoveries. The middle class in our region is on the rise for the first time in a long time, and the nearly 2,500 steamfitters I represent, and their families, depend on these opportunities associated with this new energy renaissance to maintain a middle-class lifestyle.

Consol and the overwhelming majority of the other companies operating in this area are doing it the right way — they care about safety and the environment. Consol is also deeply committed to utilizing Pennsylvania contractors and believes Pennsylvania gas work should go to Pennsylvanians. It’s in their interest not to cut corners and to ensure they treat our communities with respect, or they won’t be in business for very long.

The project at Pittsburgh International Airport represents a nearly $1 billion investment in the region over its lifetime. How can we pass up an opportunity like this that only comes along once every few generations?

Industry, labor, government and individual citizens need to work together to get this right. This is our chance to make a better future for our children, grandchildren and for the great city we are all fortunate to call home.
