Some Port Authority customers were waiting up to an hour for light-rail vehicles during rush hour this evening after a couple of the vehicles lost power and stopped in their tracks.
The light-rail vehicles lost power from overhead cables that jolt the cars ahead, authority spokesman Adam Brandolph said.
Mr. Brandolph said one or two light-rail vehicles heading outbound on the T’s Blue Line lost power shortly before 6 p.m. One of the vehicles was stopped on the bridge over the Monongahela River.
The light-rail vehicles were headed through Allentown on what is known as the Brown Line because the Mount Washington Transit Tunnel has been closed since Wednesday for emergency repairs.
The outbound side of the tunnel, which takes light-rail vehicles underneath Mount Washington from Station Square to South Hills Junction, was closed after workers found a broken rail.
Port Authority workers began repairs today, and they are expected to be complete on Saturday.
Until repairs are completed, outbound light-rail vehicles will continue to use the tracks that run through Allentown. Inbound light-rail vehicles will continue to use the tunnel, as will buses.
A rail shuttle will operate between Station Square and First Avenue until the repairs are complete.
