GLENOLDEN, Pa. — An off-duty police officer was shot and killed Saturday inside his Philadelphia-area home, police said. They said no one was taken into custody, but they were not searching for a suspect.
Darby Township police said officers responding to a call of a shooting around 4:30 p.m. found the officer in an upstairs bedroom with a single gunshot wound to his chest. He was pronounced dead at Penn Presbyterian Hospital in Philadelphia.
The name of the officer was not immediately released pending notification of his family. The 26-year-old officer had worked part-time for the Darby Borough Police Department for four years.
Darby Township police Chief Len McDevitt Jr. said a woman was in the home at the time of the shooting. He declined to describe the shooting as a domestic incident, saying he did not have all the facts.
Police had conducted preliminary interviews by Saturday night and were executing a search warrant at the home. Chief McDevitt said he expected homicide charges to be filed Sunday afternoon.
“There is no danger to the public and there is no one on the loose,” he said.
Darby Borough Police Chief Robert Smythe described the officer as professional and good-hearted.
“He was a shining star in the department,” Chief Smythe said at a news conference, choking back tears. “He was an even-tempered, nice guy. ... He knew how to talk to people and how to handle people.”
The officer also was a volunteer firefighter.
