St. Clair officer killed in New Florence shooting

A St. Clair township police officer was fatally shot at a New Florence residence late Saturday.

Officer Lloyd Reed died at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown after responding to a call for a domestic dispute at 131 Ligonier Street around 9:15 p.m., authorities said. Officer Reed had been in law enforcement for 25 years and had been with the St. Clair township department for five years.

At the residence, police said, the officer exchanged gunfire with Ray Shetler Jr., 31, of New Florence, who fled the scene.

Mr. Shetler was arrested early this morning after a hours-long search, police said. According to KDKA-TV’s Amy Wadas, Mr. Shetler was seen on Route 711 in New Florence, and state police said he suffered a bullet wound in his shoulder from initial contact with police and was being taken to the hospital for treatment.

Officials: Shooter knew he was confronting an officer

State police Trooper Stephen Limani, who spoke earlier in the morning during a press conference at Laurel Valley Elementary School, said the exchange between Mr. Shetler and Officer Reed was quick. The woman involved in the domestic incident suffered minor injuries.

Trooper Limani at the time declined to release what weapon was used in the incident or whether officers recovered the weapon.
