Washington County volunteer firefighter dies hours after responding to vehicle crash

A 73-year-old man, who was a volunteer with the Ellsworth Fire Department in Washington County, died hours after responding to the scene of a vehicle crash on Saturday.

The county coroner’s office said Laron Holcomb, of Ellsworth, Washington County, responded to an accident at Route 136 and Morrison Lane in Eighty Four shortly before 1:30 p.m. 

After leaving the accident scene, authorities said, Mr. Holcomb returned home and experienced shortness of breath.

He was transported to Washington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about six hours later.

The cause of death is pending an autopsy.
