A fire erupted at a natural gas compressor station early Saturday, burning for more than two hours and displacing the residents of a home during a temporary evacuation.
The Callisto compressor facility in Morris Township, Greene County, is operated by Equitrans Midstream Corp., which dispatched technicians to the scene to close valves after the 1 a.m. explosion. That stopped the flow of gas and left the remaining material to burn off by itself, which it did by 3:30 a.m.
There were no injuries, and the temporary evacuation was done as a precaution, said Natalie Cox, a spokeswoman for the Canonsburg-based firm. A local fire department put out all residual flames.
“At this time, the cause of the ignition is unknown, and a root cause investigation is under way,” she said.
The fire began at a dehydration unit, which removes moisture from natural gas so it can be fed into a pipeline.
Ms. Cox said Equitrans was conducting an environmental assessment of the station and the surrounding area and had notified “all state regulatory agencies,” including environmental regulators and local officials.
