Elderly woman dies in New Castle fire

One woman was killed in a house fire Sunday in New Castle, Lawrence County.

The fire started shortly after 2 p.m. Fire crews initially responded to reports that a person may have been trapped inside the building in the 1700 block of Gretchen Avenue.

The blaze was extinguished, but the coroner’s office confirmed the fire caused the death of an elderly woman who apparently lived alone. The woman’s identity had not yet been released.
