Ten fire companies, the Allegheny County fire marshal and Hazmat units are on the scene of a two-alarm fire at a trucking company in Harmar tonight.
Allegheny Valley Assistant Fire Chief Joe Luera said the blaze at Ideal Trucking in Rich Hill Road included a number of explosions of large propane tanks, about 10 oil drums, as well as a 500-gallon oil tank.
"It was pretty loud," the chief said. "It scared guys."
No one was injured, and Chief Luera said the crews battled the fire in a defensive posture from the outset to ensure no firefighters would be injured.
"I have no firemen going anywhere near the building."
The fire was reported through an alarm company at 5:46 p.m. Crews using aerial ladder trucks had it under control about 80 minutes later.
When firefighters first arrived, Chief Luera said, the gates to the fenced-in property were locked.
He described the garage as being inside a large pole building. Two classic cars were inside, as well as tractor trailers.
Hazmat crews were called, the chief said, because of a nearby creek.
A man described by an officer on the scene as the owner did not want to comment.
