One person is in custody and another is being sought following an overnight chase from Pittsburgh’s Larimer section into Penn Hills that, police said, ended when one of the suspects ran out of the car and broke into a house.
Pittsburgh police said they attempted to stop the vehicle, a silver Lexus sedan, around 2 a.m. after it made a right turn from Fifth Avenue onto Hamilton Avenue in Larimer without using a turn signal.
The car eventually stopped in a vacant lot in the 100 block of Enterprise Street, where officers walked over to the car and ordered the driver to turn off the engine. Instead, the driver sped away, driving over a sidewalk, across Frankstown Avenue and onto Lowell Street. Police said the car went through a red light at the intersection and a stop sign at Lowell and Mayflower. Police did not pursue the vehicle.
Minutes later a different police unit attempted to stop the vehicle at Paulson Avenue near Deary Street. The vehicle took off again, and the officers did not follow it.
Then around 2:10 a.m., the officers who initially encountered the vehicle saw the Lexus on Somerset Street in Lincoln-Lemington traveling “at a high rate of speed” toward the police car. The vehicle nearly struck an officer as the officers ran out of their vehicle to get out of the way. The vehicle then sped off toward Joshua Street.
The officers chased the vehicle onto Lincoln Avenue, Campania Avenue and then onto Verona Boulevard, where the pursuit was called off due to wet and slippery roads.
Other officers observed the Lexus on Torrance Street in Penn Hills, where the vehicle stopped and the driver got out and fled into the woods. The front passenger broke into a nearby house by kicking in the back door, police said.
The homeowner came out and was not injured. Police said Dalemar Satchell, 23, of Penn Hills, was found minutes later in an upstairs bedroom. He was arrested and charged with burglary.
Police were searching for the driver. They plan to file an arrest warrant once he’s been positively identified.
Another passenger who remained in the vehicle was questioned by police and later released.
