Pregnant woman shot to death by boyfriend's father in Penn Hills, police say

A pregnant woman was shot to death by her boyfriend’s father Friday afternoon, Penn Hills police said.

Theresa Smith, 26, was standing outside Allegheny Auto Body, 4226 Verona Road, when the man shot her, said Howard Burton, Penn Hills police chief.

“Whatever transpired, I have no idea,” he said of a motive.

Penn Hills police identified the man as William Lieberth Sr., 58, to KDKA-TV. County assessment records list him as the owner of the auto shop.

Witnesses told police that Mr. Lieberth then went around the back of the business, they heard one gunshot and he didn’t return, Chief Burton said.

He had shot himself once in the head, the chief said.

Mr. Lieberth was taken to Forbes Hospital by Penn Hills medics about 1:45 p.m. He was in critical condition in the intensive care unit Friday night, hospital spokesman Jesse Miller said.

Ms. Smith died at 2:26 p.m. in the Forbes Hospital emergency room, a supervisor at the Allegheny County medical examiner’s office said. The supervisor said the office would confirm Ms. Smith's pregnancy after an autopsy Saturday.

Chief Burton said at least one or two other family members were at the business during the shooting.

The chief said he will consult with the district attorney’s office Monday morning before filing charges.

Mr. Lieberth’s business had been located on East Ohio Street, North Side, for nearly four decades. In 2012, it was evicted because of an expansion of Route 28.
