A man who was rescued from the Monongahela River near the 10th Street Bridge on Saturday has died.
Thomas Jahanian, 28, of Pittsburgh, was pronounced dead at UPMC Mercy Hospital at 2:39 p.m. Saturday. Divers from Pittsburgh River Rescue responded to the call around 1:45 p.m. Saturday and brought Mr. Jahanian to the 18th Street wharf, where he was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
Mr. Jahanian is the son of Carnegie Mellon University President Farnam Jahanian and wife Tris. CMU spokeswoman Shilpa Bakre said Mr. Jahanian died in a drowning accident and expressed the family’s gratitude to a bystander who saw him in need of assistance while swimming and called 911. They also are grateful to the first responders and hospital medical personnel.
The family asked for privacy as they mourn the “unexpected and tragic loss of their son,” Ms. Bakre said in a statement.
Police were alerted to the emergency Saturday by the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission, which reported seeing a man going under water in the area of the 10th Street Bridge on the South Side. He was taken to the hospital by Medic 7.
