The public will have a chance to weigh in Wednesday on Pittsburgh’s efforts to fight climate change and pollution.
City Council will host a public hearing at 6 p.m. in the City-County Building, Downtown, on the updated Pittsburgh Climate Action Plan. It lists the city’s strategies and goals to curb greenhouse gas emissions, including a switch to all-renewable electricity sources for municipal operations by 2030. On the same timeline, it also seeks a 50 percent reduction in transportation emissions citywide.
The proposed advisory document follows Mayor Bill Peduto’s goals that he signed in 2015 in Paris, “where he was one of the 12 U.S. mayors representing our nation” at international climate talks, according to an executive summary. The city adopted an initial version of the Climate Action Plan in July 2008.
City planning commissioners approved the latest version in October, recommending that City Council do the same. A presentation on the plan will precede public comment at Wednesday’s hearing. City officials are offering advance sign-ups for those who wish to speak at the gathering. Sign-up information is available through the city website. A complete copy of the draft document also is posted.
