Pittsburgh police said a 10-year-old boy called 911 in June when his mother and grandmother overdosed on heroin at their home in the Elliott neighborhood of the city.
Kristin Garrett, 32, and Janet Garrett, 72, were supposed to be watching the 10-year-old boy and his 4-year-old sister when they overdosed around 7:45 p.m. June 22 at their Herschel Street home, police said.
The 10-year-old boy ran to a neighbor’s house to call 911 when he found the women lying on the living room floor unresponsive, according to a police affidavit.
Paramedics and police responded to the residence and administered Narcan to the women, who were both revived. One of the officers at the scene asked Kristin Garrett what she took, and she pulled out four empty stamp bags marked “stolen” in red ink from her left pocket, the affidavit said.
The women were taken to UPMC Mercy, according to police.
Police said the father of the children came to the house and took custody of the 10-year-old and 4-year-old. He told investigators that Kristin and Janet Garrett had been using heroin together, and said he was afraid to leave his house to go to work.
Kristin and Janet Garrett were each charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of children and recklessly endangering another person.
