Pittsburgh police are still looking for two additional suspects in the beating death of a Somali cab driver who had been on the job for about one week.
Ramadhan Mohamed, 31, of Northview Heights died at UPMC Presbyterian at 5:49 p.m. Friday, according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office. Police said he had been found severely beaten Tuesday behind 436-438 Climax St., Beltzhoover.
Two suspects, King Edwards and Hosea Moore, both 20, of Beltzhoover were arrested Friday before Mr. Mohamed died on charges of attempted homicide, robbery and conspiracy. Two others, Daniel Russell, 19, and Christen Glenn, 18, are still being sought.
Police said the men called for a cab with the intent of robbing the driver and after he was beaten one of them went back to attack him again to make sure he was dead.
The medical examiner’s office said Mr. Mohamed died from blunt force trauma to the head and ruled his death a homicide.
Mr. Mohamed was employed as a zTrip cab driver with Pittsburgh Transportation Group. The company said he had been there two weeks, one week for training and one as a driver.
Company President Jamie Campolongo issued a statement today in which he said the company was “shocked” by the incident, offered sympathy to Mr. Mohamed’s family and condemned the attack. The company said drivers are collecting money for Mr. Mohamed’s family and it will match the donations.
The company also will place black ribbons on all zTrip cabs.
“Pittsburgh Transportation Group condemns such acts of violence and is fully cooperating with the Pittsburgh police, district attorney or any other authorized governmental agency investigating this horrific crime,” the statement said. “We believe Pittsburgh to be a generally safe, tolerant and friendly city and were shocked by this tragic event.”
Ramadhan Mohamed leaves behind a wife who is eight months pregnant and a 2-year-old son, both of whom live in Kenya. The Islamic Center of Pittsburgh in Oakland will hold a funeral service known as a Janazah Prayer after the regular 1 p.m. after Duhr Prayer.
After the Janazah, there will be a procession from the center to Chartiers Cemetery in Carnegie for burial.
An account has been set up to help pay for funeral costs at launchgood.com/ramadhan.
