East Street project will make room for protected bike lanes

Beginning this week, Pittsburgh's Department of Public Works will install a protected bike lane as part of repaving a portion of East Street on the North Side.

The project, which is expected to take about three weeks weather permitting, will result in a new traffic pattern along East Street between Lareda and Suffolk streets in the Spring Hill-City View area. When the project is done, the area will have shorter pedestrian crossings, one less northbound travel lane and plastic bollards to separate bike lanes from motorists.

Public works and city planners worked with neighborhood groups and St. Boniface Church on East Street for about nine months to design the project. The bike lanes are expected to cost $66,100.
