Man stabbed on Smithfield Street Bridge

A man and woman who were crossing the Smithfield Street Bridge were attacked about 9:40 p.m. Friday.

According to a news release issued by the city this morning, a man and woman, both in their early 20s, were walking on the bridge when a man on a skateboard blocked their path on the sidewalk. The pair asked the man on the skateboard to move, but he yelled at them and threw the man’s bicycle into the river.

The man on the skateboard then pulled a knife and stabbed the man crossing the bridge in the forearm.

The woman was not stabbed although she was chased with the knife.The assailant fled in the direction of the Boulevard of the Allies.

A bystander called 911 and described the assailant as being white, having blond hair and between 20 and 30 years old. The skateboard was black.

The man who was stabbed was taken to UPMC Mercy and in good condition.

The incident remains under investigation.
