Marc Marotta, high school basketball star in the '70s, dies in Milwaukee

Marc Marotta, one of the top high school basketball players in Western Pennsylvania more than three decades ago, died Wednesday in Milwaukee of a brain aneurysm. Mr. Marotta was 52.

Mr. Marotta graduated from Pittsburgh Central Catholic High School in 1980. He went on to play at Marquette University, where he was a three-time academic All-American.

He attended Harvard Law School and was a a partner and business lawyer at Foley & Lardner in Milwaukee. Mr. Marotta also was secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Administration under then-Gov. Jim Doyle from 2003-05. Mr. Marottoa also was the chairman of the board of the BMO Harris Bradley Center, home of the Milwaukee Bucks NBA team.

In a WPIAL playoff game as a senior at Central Catholic in 1980, Mr. Marotta scored 48 points in a victory against Latrobe. It is the second-most points ever scored in a WPIAL playoff game.

Mr. Marotta was a 6-foot-6 forward and is one of only four players in Central Catholic history to score 1,000 career points. In 1980, he was selected to the Post-Gazette Fabulous 5 all-star team along with Frank Dobbs of Allderdice, Hal Bentley of New Brighton, Dwight Collins of Beaver Falls and Cleveland "Shang" Bibbens of Brashear.

Mr. Marotta is survived by his wife and four children.
