Awards and Honors
Mark Roth, an award-winning senior staff writer at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, received the 2014 Friend of the Center for the Neural Basis of Cognition Award from Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh. Mr. Roth is being recognized for journalism that brings current science and medical issues to the public’s attention. The center integrates Pitt’s strengths in bioengineering, math, psychology, and basic and clinical neuroscience with Carnegie Mellon’s strengths in psychology, computer science, biological sciences and statistics to investigate the neural mechanisms that give rise to human cognitive abilities. The center also trains the next generation of neuroscientists through an interdisciplinary graduate and postdoctoral training program and fosters close collaborations between faculty.
Goodwill of Southwestern Pennsylvania announced the winners of its 2014 Power of Work Awards, which honors employers and organizations for their efforts in support of workforce development. The winners are: Construction Junction, Highmark, UPMC and Vinny’s Hair Design.
A new method to model catalytic reactions and improve production of chemicals and polymers developed by researchers at the Pitt Swanson School of Engineering was the cover article in the November issue of “Catalysis Science & Technology” published by the Royal Society of Chemistry. “Structure–activity relationships on metal-oxides: alcohol dehydration” (volume 4, number 11) was led by principal investigator Giannis Mpourmpakis, assistant professor of chemical and petroleum engineering at the Swanson School. Co-authors were Raymond J. Gorte, professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, and student researchers Pavlo Kostestkyy and Jingye Yu.
Washington & Jefferson College honored Larry O’Brien, chief operating officer for Universal Protection Services, and Helen Hanna Casey, president and CEO of Howard Hanna Real Estate Services, as Entrepreneurs of the Year at its 28th annual Entrepreneurial Leadership Dinner, Nov. 13, at The Duquesne Club.
