'Fences' filming turns back the clock in Pittsburgh

The movie version of August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning ”Fences” is turning the clock back to 1957 in the Hill District.

The Paramount film, directed by and starring Denzel Washington, has begun filming, using vintage cars, period-appropriate ads and movie magic to place the play in the 1950s, when former Negro League ballplayer Troy Maxson (Mr. Washington) laments never having his shot at the Major Leagues.

“Fences” is one of 10 plays the late playwright Wilson wrote about African-American life in each decade of the 20th century, with nine set in Pittsburgh.
