Carnegie Museums notifies the state it plans to lay off 76 employees

The Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh has notified the state Department of Labor and Industry that it intends to lay off 76 employees as of July 8.

The notice lists these areas that would be affected: Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History in Oakland, the Edward O’Neil Research Center in East Liberty (storage and research area for the natural history museum), Andy Warhol on the North Side, Science Center on the North Shore and the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh in Oakland.

Companies and institutions are required to provide the state advance notice of any large-scale layoffs.

Simultaneously, the Carnegie Museums has asked its security guards to reapply for their jobs. Carnegie plans to contract security work from 3G Security Solutions moving forward, a sister company to AM-GUARD Security Guards Services, with which the company has previously contracted security work.

Can Carnegie Museums attract a dynamic leader who also knows how to raise money?

The Carnegie Museums, which has a $55 million annual budget and 1,061 employees, has seen a recent turnover of its top executives, including its president, Jo Ellen Parker, who resigned Feb. 2 with four months still left on her contract. She is the fourth president to serve in seven years. A search is underway for her replacement.
