John James Audubon, the artist, hunter and naturalist who documented the birds of America in 435 hand-colored engravings, will be celebrated Friday at the University of Pittsburgh’s Hillman Library in Oakland.
Audubon Day is a free event. From 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., there will be an exhibition of 22 original Audubon prints in Room 363 on the third floor of the Hillman Library. Other events are planned in Room G-49 on the library’s ground floor:
• 10:a.m. Kate St. John of Greenfield will give a 45-minute talk about the peregrine falcons that live atop the Cathedral of Learning. She writes the blog birdsOutsideMyWindow.org.
• 11 a.m and 2 p.m. Visitors can meet a live bird of prey from the National Aviary.
• 1 p.m.: Melissa Yang, a Pitt doctoral candidate in English, will speak on “Exploring Pittsburgh’s Birdscapes.”
