RADical Days will offer free admission to local attractions

The 16th annual RADical Days begins this weekend with free admissions to Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History, Sen. John Heinz History Center and Western PA Sports Museum, and the National Aviary, among other local attractions.

RADical Days is a thank-you to the public for supporting arts and culture organizations, regional parks, libraries, sports and civic facilities through the Regional Asset District tax.

It will run through Oct. 15 with free admissions to favorite Pittsburgh places, along with special events including workshops, exhibitions, concerts and dance performances.

Here is the full schedule:

FRIDAY

Pittsburgh Cultural Trust: Gallery Crawl in the Cultural District features art openings and live music. Free. 5:30-10 p.m.

Attack Theatre: Performance of “Some Assembly Required” at Society for Contemporary Craft, 2100 Smallman St., Strip District. Free. 7 p.m.

SATURDAY

Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History, 4400 Forbes Ave., Oakland. See “20/20: The Studio Museum in Harlem” at Carnegie Museum of Art and explore the dinosaurs in Carnegie Museum of Natural History. Free. 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Society for Contemporary Craft, 2100 Smallman St., Strip District. Experience “Shelter: Crafting a Safe Home,” meet summer artist-in-residence Ryder Henry and get creative with making your own handmade paper. Free. 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

North Hills Arts Center, 3432 Babcock Blvd., McCandless. Families can participate in four autumn-themed art projects: clay leaf tray, fall bandana, fall tree watercolor and fruit- and leaf-printed note cards. Free. 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

Allegheny County Parks, Hartwood Acres Park Amphitheater, Middle Rd., Hampton. Hartwood Hay Day and Family Green Fest with hay rides, hay maze, arts and crafts, petting zoo, puppet shows, games and more. The Family Green Fest features educational and informational activities focused on the environment, as well as I Made It! Market. Free. Noon-4 p.m.

Pittsburgh Musical Theater, 327 South Main St., West End. Dancing in The Streets features performances by the school’s conservatory program, attractions, free refreshments and, of course, dancing in the streets. PMT Parking Lot; inside if it rains. Free admission. 2:30-4 p.m.


 

SUNDAY

Sen. John Heinz History Center and Western PA Sports Museum, 1212 Smallman St., Strip District. Artifacts include the original television set from “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,” Bill Mazeroski’s bat and uniform from Game 7 of the 1960 World Series, and the world’s oldest jeep. Free. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Special Performances: South Hills Chorale (2 p.m.), Pittsburgh Youth Chorus (2:30 p.m.), Allegheny Brass Band (3 p.m.).

National Aviary, 700 Arch St., North Side. Get up close to more than 500 birds from around the world. Free. 10 a.m.- 5 p.m.

Union Project, 801 N. Negley Ave., Highland Park. Explore words and language while creating clay in a free, all-ages drop-in workshop in the ceramics studio (2-5 p.m.). Plus, check out locally created zines, comics and chapbooks at the 7th Annual Pittsburgh Zine Fair (2-8 p.m.). Free.

Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, 4400 Forbes Ave., Oakland. Reggae music by The Flow Band. Free. 2 p.m.


 

SEPT. 25

Phipps Conservatory & Botanical Gardens, Schenley Park, Oakland. Glass art, historic sculptures and waterfalls displayed in 13 indoor and six outdoor gardens. Free. 9:30 a.m.-11 p.m.

Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum, 4141 Fifth Ave., Oakland. Military memorial dedicated to honoring the men and women of all branches of service, from all generations and conflicts. Free. 10 a.m.-4 pm.

Tull Family Theater, 418 Walnut St., Sewickley. Screening of the 1974 film “The Great Gatsby”: Admission is free, seating is limited; first come, first served. 5 p.m.

Pittsburgh Public Theater, Youth Theater Experience at Scott Twp Library, 301 Lindsay Rd. Pittsburgh Public Theater will offer a hands-on experience for students ages 7-13 to learn more about the theater and try their hand at improvisation activities. RSVP with Scott Twp library as space is limited: scottlibrary.org. Free. 6:30 p.m.


 

SEPT. 26

The Andy Warhol Museum, 117 Sandusky St., North Shore. Guests can visit The Factory underground to create their own work of art and make their own screen test. Free. 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Heinz Field, 900 Art Rooney Ave., North Shore. A behind-the-scenes look into the FedEx Great Hall, clubs, luxury suites, press box, field and more. Tours on the hour; limit 50 guests per tour. Tours are first come, first served. No advance reservations. Enter at the FedEx Great Hall entrance. Free. 10 a.m.-3 p.m.


 

SEPT. 28

Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania, 614 Dorseyville Rd., Fox Chapel. Owl Prowl: Learn about local owls and search for them on the trails at Beechwood Farms Nature Reserve. Hike is led by an environmental educator. Space limited; register at aswp.org or 412-963-6100. Free. 7 p.m. Reservations required.


 

SEPT. 29

David L. Lawrence Convention Center, 1000 Ft. Duquesne Blvd., Downtown. Tour of the environmentally smart building. Call to reserve tour time: 412-565-6000. Complimentary parking is available in the DLCC garage on 10th Street. Bring your parking ticket in and exchange for your tour ticket. Free admission for tours: 10 a.m., 11 a.m., noon, 1 p.m.

Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild, 1815 Metropolitan St., North Side. Experience Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild’s Inspiring Makers interactive exhibit featuring live jazz, gallery talks and hands-on design arts activities. Snacks available from Bidwell Training Center's culinary students. Free. 4:30-6:30 p.m.


 

SEPT. 30

Sweetwater Center for the Arts, 200 Broad St., Sewickley. Ceramics tech will offer demos and guide instruction. Pre-registration is required for limited spots available. Day-of walk-ins will be granted if space is available. Note: glazed work takes up to two weeks to be fired, so they will notify you when your piece is available for pick up. Carnegie - Carnegie Music Hall, 300 Beechwood Ave., Carnegie. Family concert and activities: Tuesday Musical Club (noon), Make your own instrument (1 p.m.), Interactive family story time (2 p.m.), Chatham Baroque (3 p.m.). Free. Noon-4 p.m.

New Hazlett Theater and Texture Contemporary Ballet, 6 Allegheny Square East, North Side. Texture presents excerpts from “Boundless,” followed by interactive games for the children in the audience. Carnegie Science Center, One Allegheny Ave., North Shore. Discover the science behind Pittsburgh's rivers and see some local animals in H2Oh! Defy Gravity on the Ropes Challenge, try to score against Hockey-bot, tour an authentic submarine, and explore the model railroad. Free. Laser shows not included. 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Fort Pitt Museum, Point State Park. Step back in time to Pittsburgh’s birthplace at the Fort Pitt Museum and discover the world-shaping events that occurred in Western Pennsylvania. Free. 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

PNC Park, North Shore. Tour visits the Legacy Theatre, batting cages, dugout and press box. On the hour from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with the last tour starting at 2 p.m.; 80 guest maximum, on a first-served basis. No reservations will be taken. Enter the gate next to the Willie Stargell Statue on Federal Street. Free. 10 a.m.–3 p.m. (tours only).

OCT. 3

Pittsburgh Cultural Trust: StoryCorner at Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh - Downtown & Business, 612 Smithfield St., Downtown. Join Ms. Betty and her friends on an imaginary journey as they hear the story “Crocodile Beat” by Gail Jorgensen. Interactive movement, puppets, and call-and-response animal sounds lead children to take part in the animals' parade. Free. 4 p.m.

Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Heinz Hall, 600 Penn Ave., Downtown. Free concert features associate conductor Andrés Franco leading the orchestra in a program of light classics: Rossini’s Overture to La gazza ladra, Mascagni’s intermezzo from Cavalleria rusticana, and Bizet’s Suite No. 1 and Suite No. 2 from Carmen. Duquesne University Young Artist National Concerto Competition winner Kevin Zhu joins the PSO for Paginini’s Concerto No. 1 in D major for violin and orchestra. Silver Eye Center for Photography, 4808 Penn Ave., Bloomfield. See “The Notion of Family, a solo exhibition by LaToya Ruby Frazier exploring the legacy of racism, the working class, and economic decline in America’s small towns. Free. 6-10 p.m.

The Frick Pittsburgh, 7227 Reynolds St., Point Breeze. Explore Clayton, the restored Frick family mansion, view fine and decorative art at The Frick Art Museum, and experience “Elise Adibi: Respiration Paintings,” a multisensory installation in the Greenhouse. Free. 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Allegheny County Parks, South Park Fairgrounds, Brownsville Road. South Park Hay Day and Public Safety & Health Day features activities for the whole family, including hay rides, hay maze, arts and crafts, petting zoo, puppet shows and games. Free. Noon-4 p.m.

OCT. 8

Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium, 7340 Butler St., Highland Park. Free day at the zoo will feature a special performance by River City Brass Band at the Water's Edge exhibit at 11 a.m. Delays are expected in areas surrounding the Zoo. Free. 9 a.m.-5 p.m. (gates close at 4 p.m.)

Mattress Factory, 500 Sampsonia Way, North Side. A contemporary art museum and experimental lab features site-specific installations created by artists in residence from around the world. The Mattress Factory will offer a free drop-in tour at 2 p.m. Meet a museum educator at the admissions desk for an introduction to installation art and a guided gallery experience. Free. 1-5 p.m.

South Park Theatre, Corner of Brownsville Road and Corrigan Drive, South Park. Vintage Hitchcock – A Live Radio Play, performed in the style of a 1940s radio broadcast. Free. 2 p.m.

OCT. 9

OCT. 12

Pittsburgh Cultural Trust: Family Engagement Workshop at Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, 279 Fisk St., Lawrenceville. Teaching Artist Amber Fantini will engage families through music and movement while they explore the story “Oh No George!” Adults will learn art strategies that support their child’s social-emotional development. Children will learn right alongside their caregivers during these engaging sessions. Free. 10:30 a.m.

OCT. 14

Pittsburgh Cultural Trust: Ghost Stories, Pittsburgh Cultural Trust Arts Education Center 805-807 Liberty Ave., Downtown. Storyteller Alison K. Babusci shares a spine-tingling tale for all ages. Bring your PJs and a pillow if you’d like. For children 5+, accompanied by an adult. Free. Noon.

Pittsburgh Opera: Brown Bag Concert, 2425 Liberty Ave., Strip District. The Pittsburgh Opera Resident Artists present a variety of opera favorites, selections from upcoming operas and more. After the performance, meet the Resident Artists at an informal reception. Doors open at 11:30 a.m.. The Pittsburgh Opera garage is available only for handicapped parking, by reservation. Children’s Museum, 10 Children’s Way, North Side. Maker Faire Pittsburgh is an all-ages festival of tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, engineers, science clubs, artists, startups and students who show their creations and offer hands-on activities. Free 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Also, visit the broadcast studios of The Saturday Light Brigade and Youth Express. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
