Midwife Center Birthday
A midwife crisis was avoided a year ago when the new Midwife Center opened on Penn Avenue. Bigger, brighter and better, it's Pittsburgh's only licensed and free-standing birth center. Celebrating its first anniversary in the space Thursday with tours and plans for classroom updates were executive director Christine Haas, board president Josette Fitzgibbons, Nancy Niemczyk, Sharon Dipaolo and Bill Byham with his daughter Tacy. Guests showed their support for the new Education Program that will feature classes including Infant CPR and Prenatal Yoga by bidding on the silent auction items and taking a chance on the 50/50 raffle.

Public Theater Dinner
Dr. Lawrence Gipson and Lenka Braden gave the Pittsburgh Public Theater a dose of support by hosting a benefit dinner Saturday night at a private residence. Flying in from Prague with his wife, Andrea, to create a Bohemian feast was Braden's brother chef Rene Mihula. But before the repast there was a little repartee and repertoire. Performing from the "Shakespeare Monologue Contest" were Lara Hillier and Corey Hudson, while Matt Morgan added his voice in song. Applauding a perfect evening were Dr. Mark and Jamie Blatter, Judge Gary Lancaster, Suzanne Mauro and Rocco Violla, Richard and Sarah Giza, Dr. David and Carmen Anderson and Ted Pappas. -- P.S.

ALS and Andy
Andy Warhol knew how to party, which is why benefits held at the Andy Warhol Museum seem to be infused with his eccentric energy. Taking advantage of the venue Saturday night were supporters of the ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) Association of Western Pennsylvania. Surrounded by those famous silk-screen portraits, they sipped their way through "Wines at the Warhol." The wine tasting to benefit the association included sustenance from the Big Burrito Group. Among the grapeful were president Sarah Wood, V.P. Nadav Baum, executive director Michael Bernarding, Mark and Myrna Mason, Damian and Terri Soffer, Frank and Beth Ann Fuhrer, Steve and Eileen Brazinski and Grant and Lisa Mason. -- P.S.

Kappa Scholarship Breakfast
The early bird gets the worm and sometimes a scholarship. The Kappa Scholarship Endowment Fund of Western Pennsylvania held its 14th Annual High School Scholarship Awards Program Buffet Breakfast Saturday at the Fox Chapel Yacht Club. More than 100 guests were taking pictures of graduates on the decks and socializing before bacon and eggs and more. Chairing the program was Thomas Motley (with Lillie), with co-chair Ted Duncan. The students whose scholarships had come in were Allen Chapman, Loren Kirkland, Thomas Moore and Darrell Wolford. Applauding were Kappa president Moses McNeese and Paul Williams. -- P.S.
