West Virginia made 17 of 21 free throws against Bellarmine’s 5 for 8 and held the Knights to just 33.8% shooting from the field in a 62-58 Mountaineers win on Sunday afternoon at WVU Coliseum in Morgantown.
While the Mountaineers (3-3) were stout on the defensive end of the floor, they didn’t exactly set the world on fire shooting the ball. West Virginia shot 21 of 51 from the floor, including a paltry 3 for 16 (18.8%) from 3-point range. The Mountaineers also had just nine assists to 14 turnovers as a team.
Jesse Edwards led the way for West Virginia with a double-double of 17 points and 14 rebounds. Quinn Slazinski (16 points), Kobe Johnson (13 points) and Ofri Naveh (10 points) also ended the game in double-figures for the Mountaineers. Bellarmine (2-5) was paced by 19 points from Peter Suder and 10 points off the bench from Bash Wieland.
Next up for the Mountaineers is a date with Rick Pitino-coached St. John’s (4-2) in the Big East-Big 12 Battle. The game will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the WVU Coliseum and will be televised on ESPN2.
