Rookie receiver Roman Wilson, whose first season in the NFL has been marred by ankle and hamstring injuries, has been placed on injured reserve before Monday night’s game against the New York Giants. A third-round pick out of Michigan, Wilson has to spend at least four weeks on IR before he can be added back to the active roster, but there is no guarantee he’ll return before the end of the season.
Wilson dressed for one game this season and played five snaps in the victory against the Raiders earlier this month.
Wilson’s season has been riddled with injuries. He suffered a high ankle sprain during the first week of training camp and missed the remainder of summer practices. Once he was healthy enough to practice, he had a difficult time breaking into the receiver rotation and was a healthy scratch for the first five games of the season.
After playing against the Raiders, Wilson suffered a hamstring injury while the team was preparing to play the Jets and did not dress last week. He aggravated the hamstring injury on Wednesday and was ruled out of the game on Saturday.
The Steelers elevated receiver Brandon Johnson from the practice squad to the active roster for the Giants game. They also added running back Jonathan Ward to the active roster and released running back Aaron Shampklin.
Johnson will dress for a third game this season. He has one catch for 9 yards and has played mostly on special teams.
