Quarterback Kenny Pickett is scheduled to have a surgical procedure Monday on his injured right ankle and is expected to be out two to four weeks, according to sources.
The extent of Pickett’s injury will not be fully determined until he has the procedure, which means he could be out even longer.
Steelers players were aware after Sunday’s 24-10 loss to the Arizona Cardinals that Pickett’s injury was not good.
Pickett was injured in the second quarter when he scrambled for a 2-yard gain on a third-and-goal play from the 3-yard line in Sunday’s 24-10 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. He was replaced by Mitch Trubisky and did not return to the game.
Before he was injured, Pickett was 7 of 10 for 70 yards that included a 38-yard completion to receiver George Pickens on the third play of the game, setting up a field goal.
Trubisky, who appeared for two plays in the first half, was 11 of 17 for 117 yards and led the Steelers on their only touchdown drive with 4:25 remaining.
Trubisky will start against the New England Patriots on Thursday night, his first start since Week 14 last season when he led the Steelers to a 24-16 victory in Carolina. He is 2-3 in five career starts with the Steelers.
This is the fifth time Trubisky has had to replace Pickett because of injury, either as a starter or in relief.
The Steelers ended up losing three starters to injuries in the first half of Sunday’s 24-10 loss to the Arizona Cardinals — Pickett (ankle), guard Isaac Seumalo (shoulder) and inside linebacker Elandon Roberts (groin).
