Ray Fittipaldo: Welcome to NFL Draft chat night II. Post your questions and I’ll be back in a few to get things started.
BigBensBeard: name the 3 best defensive players yet to be drafted that would fit in with the Steelers.
Ray Fittipaldo: I guess I’d have to go with safeties and LBs because that’s what the Steelers need IF they draft a defender at 49. So you still have Xavier McKinney of Alabama on the board. He’d fit in as a deep safety which in turn would allow Terrell Edmunds to transition to hybrid LB. Then you have a guy like Zac Baun of Wisconsin. He’s a smaller edge type player, so I’m not sure how he’d fit in with the Steelers, but he’s a really good player. Maybe you have to have a plan on how to utilize his talents. I just think it’d be hard to have him line up on the edge and rush the passer on most downs. Not sure he’d hold up agianst the bigger tackles he’ll face in the NFL. Same goes for Josh Uche of Michigan, the LB from Michigan. Another safety is Grant Delpit from LSU. Same thing with McKinney. He’d play deep and let Edmunds move down.
Lil Petey: Akers, Taylor, Dobbins...who are you taking?
Ray Fittipaldo: If I’m ranking those three I’d go Taylor, Akers, Dobins, but I like all three. Taylor and Akers are faster so I think that’s what the Steelers need in a back right now.
Drowins: If Dobbins is there at 49 he HAS to be the guy right? Even if other backs there? He can do it all. Grab receiver/OL in 3rd. What say you?
Ray Fittipaldo: As stated above, I have no problem with Dobbins. He’s a good back.
Jacob Emerick: The Steelers only have 6 draft picks. Will it be enough to get the team into the Super Bowl conversation?
Ray Fittipaldo: If getting in the Super Bowl conversation means making it back to the playoffs then I say yes. I think they’ll be one of the seven teams from the AFC in the tournament as long as Roethlisberger plays most of the season.
kett: hi Ray, might one of those edge pass rushers be there at 49, still a few good ones on the board
Ray Fittipaldo: If you mean Gorss-Matos and Epenesa maybe. But I don’t view them as traditional 3-4 OLBs in the Steelers mold.
Dennis: any chance of trading up for Swift or Dobbins
Ray Fittipaldo: I doubt it unless it’s only a few spots.
paullochrane@yahoo.com: ok phony, i mean poney, whats your pick for the draft, i know your always right, just like when you said duck was playing better than brady !!!!!
Ray Fittipaldo: Wrong station! Turn the dial to 93.7 The Fan. HAHAHA.
MS Steeler: I feel like there are so many good options in round 2 that everyone will be happy. What do you see as the best options in #?
Ray Fittipaldo: Best options at 49? I say go WR or RB.
Bob in TN: If the WR’s are as good as advertised wouldn’t it be smart to take the best RB first then get a WR in round 3?
Ray Fittipaldo: Remember they’re picking at the end of round 3 -- pick 102. So you might be taking a chance if there is a run on receivers. But I see your point. You might be able to get a really good WR in Round 3 while you won’t have the same opportunity with RBs.
Linebacker Lounge: I want an LB at 49.. Especially fill the Buck spot.. Logan Wilson!! Or Baum or Malik Harrison OLB depth.. RB / WR in 3rd if deep as they say.. Thoughts?
Ray Fittipaldo: Might be a little bit of a reach for Wilson or Harrison at 49. Baun is good,, but again, I’d like to know how they’ll use him. He played on the edge quite a bit at Wisconsin.
Vincent Vega: Guessing there will be a run (ha ha) on backs to start round 2. Swift, Akers, Dobbins, and Taylor go quickly. Do the Steelers make a trade when there is still one left, or wait for a receiver?
Ray Fittipaldo: Enough depth at WR to sit tight and make a pick I think. By the way, I’d be surprised if Taylor, Akers, Dobbins and Swift are all gone by 49. That’d be an upset.
Tomservo: Don’t take RB. Hargrave/Barron gone. JuJu/Connor/AV/Bud/Hilton/Sutton all UFA next year. Trust Snell to replace Connor more than anyone they have replacing those guys. Save RB for next year.
Ray Fittipaldo: You are aware their running game ranked 29th and 31st the past two seasons, right? And it’s not just yards per game, which can be misleading if you pass a lot. It’s yards per carry. They’re not a very good running team.
Vincent Vega: Really? I’ll be shocked if any of them are on the board at 49.
Ray Fittipaldo: Let’s see how it plays out. I think at least one of those four will be on the board.
Jeff: Shenault vs Higgins vs Mims... who best fits Steelers?
Ray Fittipaldo: Shenault or Mims would be really nice fits. I’d find a way to make both work. Mims is more of the tall, fast deep threat while Shenault is a crafty slot guy that can also make some plays down the field. I like them both.
Tomservo: Caue they’re line can run block. Walter Payton can’t fix that.
Ray Fittipaldo: Le’Veon Bell seemed to do OK
Scott in Dallas: Good Evening!
Thanks for taking the questions.
I think the best thing in the second round would be Terrell Lewis, OLB, Alabama. Bud is gone after this season and TJ will need a new contract so it is imperative to get someone to groom to man the other side. Lewis has Elite athleticism and is a little raw but he can be a true game changer opposite TJ.
Ray Fittipaldo: I like Lewis, but in Round 3 or after.
Tomservo: OL was younger then and they had Munchak
Ray Fittipaldo: I’m not defending the line. They had a terrible year. I’m the one who has been writing they need to get younger. But six tackles went off the board. The best OT prospects are gone. So you take advantage of the value in the middle of the second round and take a RB or WR. (Only LT I’d take at 49 is Ezra Cleveland because I think he has potential to be a good player for a long time. But he’s not ready yet).
Linebacker Lounge: True or False: RB at 49... Otherwise they won’t draft one? Thanks
Ray Fittipaldo: I lean true on that one.
Tomservo: And they had Bryant to take the top off the defense
Ray Fittipaldo: True. They definitely need a fast WR too.
Linebacker Lounge: If Kmet or Trautman is available at 49 will they pull the trigger? They say BPA... Will they walk the walk? Thanks!
Ray Fittipaldo: Well, they’re both third-round talents so no they won’t be taken at 49. Not even sure Trautman is a third-rounder.
Bob in TN: Saw an NFL mock today that had the Steelers taking A.J. Epenesa with Akers still on the board. With a “win now or bust” mode as Bens career winds down, do you see that as reasonable?
Ray Fittipaldo: Everyone can have an opinion, but as I said earlier, I don’t know how Epenesa fits into the Steelers defense this year.
Ronnie: I cannot see passing on a great player like Delpit from LSU if he’s there. Kids a ballhawk!!! Would you take him over one of those 5 RBs being discussed?
Ray Fittipaldo: He’s a good player. All depends on their board. If they have him as a first-round talent and those backs are second-round talents then maybe they’ll pull the trigger. But I still think offensive skill guy. I could be wrong.
Tom: Ray, thanks for doing these chats. Definitely enjoy your insights & feedback. I understand the Steelers interest in a WR but if they are to improve the running game don’t they really need a weapon at RB. There are plenty of 3rd or 4th round WR they could pick.
Ray Fittipaldo: It’s 50-50. They need help at WR and RB. But yes, you are correct you might be able to get a good WR in Round 3, maybe even 4.
Tomservo: plus Connor will still start so Rookie RB won’t play much. #3 or 4 WR can have more impact than a #2 RB. Like Bryant in rookie year
Ray Fittipaldo: Why can’t the rookie play if he’s better?
Ed in FL: If the upcoming season were to be canceled, what’s the NFLs take on the ‘21 draft. Same draft order and Steelers retain pick 18?
Ray Fittipaldo: I guess they’d have to do it that way.
Tomservo: Same reason Foster kept playing even though Finney was better. coaches are loyal to a fault
Ray Fittipaldo: Not sure if that was loyalty or sentimentality, wanting to get Foster a ring for having played so long. Either way, I know what you mean.
Linebacker Lounge: Earliest surprise position pick? TE, CB, S or Other ___?
Ray Fittipaldo: CB or S. Don’t underestimate the need for DBs in today’s NFL.
kett: I hope they don’t take Jalen at 49, what team do you think will take him and what round
Ray Fittipaldo: Maybe some team in the third round.
Paul: What do you think of Grant Delpit’s 4:39 forty time from his own back yard?
Ray Fittipaldo: Lots of fast 40 times in backyards across the nation this year! Why not?
Steeltown: Hey Ray, first time in the chat. O-Line has been bad opening up running lanes for years now (built to protect Ben), that would lead me to believe WR is more important at 49, what say you?
Ray Fittipaldo: And you could be right. I think it’ll be WR or RB.
seferg: How glad will you be tomorrow morning when you don’t have to keep answering questions with wr/rb? Real question, did the way the first round went increase, decrease or have little effect on one of the 3 big name rb being available at 49?
Ray Fittipaldo: I think increase. Plus, Edwards-Helaire isn’t really their style of back so it was a bonus he went to the Chiefs.
kett: Ray, can you see the steelers dropping back a few picks to get another pick
Ray Fittipaldo: Possible though I don’t think likely.
Brian Batko: Hi guys, sorry I’m late. JuJu get traded yet?
Tomservo: Not saying they don’t need to improve at RB...they do. But what they have can work if combined with a versatile passing game that backs off the def. Only 6 picks and they absolutely have to replace Barron and Hargrave.
Ray Fittipaldo: Agree on Barron. They have to have a plan there. Hargrave? He played a lot last season because Tuitt was injured. The NT only plays 25 percent of the snaps. I think they can get a DT in the fourth round or after.
Bob in TN: We got Brady and Gronk for Ju-JU,
seferg: Have you looked at the teams in front of us in the 2nd round to see how many are likely to tag a rb?
Ray Fittipaldo: Dolphins, Jaguars maybe. I’m sure there are a few others. I think Lions too.
Brian Batko: Four, at most, in my opinion. I’d add the Bucs and MAYBE the Lions to that list. Jets and Falcons might want to draft another back at some point, but not in Round 2.
Tomservo: Do you really want to play the Ravens with Alualu as your NT?
Ray Fittipaldo: How much did Hargrave help when they ran for something like 400 yards against them in the finale? They played sub most of the game because that’s what they do.
Jobab: What would you think of Chinn as their 2nd or 3rd round pick?
Ray Fittipaldo: round 3 but dont think he’ll last
GSMP: Apologies if you discussed this, is Michael Pittman an option if he falls?
Ray Fittipaldo: Sure I think he’s an option. He’s one of the best receivers remaining.
Diz E. Fectant: Is Claypool really considered a WR-TE “ tweener”?
pdxJaxon: Good Evening Gents
Ray Fittipaldo: Some teams view him as a TE. He was asked to work out with the TEs at the combine.
Gravel: Which “Top” RB or WR still on the board would you be least enthused about for Steelers first pick but you think it is a possibility?
Brian Batko: You want us to rip a guy we’re potentially about to cover? OK, I’ll bite. Laviska Shenault, but mostly because I just don’t trust him to stay healthy.
Jobab: If they go RB in round 2, who do you think will be available for WR by the time they pick in round 3?
Ray Fittipaldo: Dream scenario would be Devin Duvernay. But he’s been getting late buzz so maybe he won’t be there at 102.
Tomservo: Didnt Claypool run the the 4.4s? Can’t believe teams would consider him a TE
Ray Fittipaldo: Didn’t Noah Fant run a ridiculous time too? In the end, it’s all about where you play him. I’d imagine he’d be split-out TE to take advantage of mismatches. Claypool is a good blocker, but he was never asked to block DEs in college.
Tim: Antonio Gibson. Does he fit what the Steelers may like in a pick. Speed w rb and wr talent
Ray Fittipaldo: He’s definitely got the speed they need. And he’s versatile. He’s played RB and WR. That would be an interesting pick.
pdxJaxon: Antonio Gibson in 3 or 4 maybe
Ray Fittipaldo: Yeah I think.
Gravel: Will position coaches of Steelers draft selections be doing a audio conference for beat writers tonight? Ditto for selections?
Ray Fittipaldo: Yes both.
Lysol Injection: Robbins similar to Amos Zereoue as a prospect, is he not?
Brian Batko: Not as famous
Nate: Is taking Devin Duvernay at 49 (if all RBs are gone) too early with pick 49 since he probably won’t be there at pick 102? Thanks!
Ray Fittipaldo: I really like him, but I don’t know if he goes in the second round.
pdxJaxon: Too early for Devin Duvernay. We could very well be there in 3rd or even early 4th IMHO.
Ray Fittipaldo: That might be wishful thinking, but yeah he’s more of a third-round guy I think
Tomservo: Duvenay is fast but can he beat the press? Don’t they have enough 5’10 receivers? If he can beat press and get downfield I’m on board but they better be sure.
Ratville: Hi thank you for the great job you both do for us. Anyway last year the big debate was which Devin LB W
Ray Fittipaldo: If only it were that easy this year.
Brian Batko: I think the Bengals go with another orange tiger in Tee Higgins.
Jobab: Were you surprised by anything in the first round?
Ratville: sorry I got cut off which LB Devin Was the better LB last year in your opinion?
Brian Batko: Most of all, Jordan Love to the Packers. But also the Raiders taking Ruggs as the first WR and Damon Arnette at 19.
Ray Fittipaldo: Very similar players. White bigger and just as fast so I think that’s why he was rated higher. Way too early to tell who’s better.
Ray Fittipaldo: It’s kind of weird how Mel Kiper keeps talking about that 201 wild card game against the Bengals and how the Bengals blew it. The Steelers were up 16-0 before a whiole bunch of weird stuff happened.
Ray Fittipaldo: And the Bengals go Higgins.
Brian Batko: OK I’m 1 for 1, folks. I’ll say Colts go with LSU safety Grant Delpit to shore up their secondary now. Polarizing player but I like him a lot and think he might be best available.
Mike: Even though the colts have hooker?
Brian Batko: Yeah, they could use another safety/chess piece type of defender. But I’ll probably be wrong.
Kline: if Taylor and Akers are both available when the Steelers pick, who would you take
Ray Fittipaldo: Probably Taylor.
Brian Batko: Colts pick is in already. Could the Steelers be up within the hour?
Ray Fittipaldo: Is it bad that I’ve never heard of Duke Tobin?
Ray Fittipaldo: Colts take Pittman.
pdxJaxon: crap. Good Pick. figured he wouldnt last
Brian Batko: I said that last night, Ray! But OK, there’s another wideout gone. And one that fit a lot of the Steelers draft tendencies. Interesting.
Mike: Darn. I really liked pittman. Best hands in the draft imo
Ray Fittipaldo: Run on WRs!
Tomservo: Dang, that’s who Steelers needed
Jim in vt: Steelers pick will be made at 816
Tim: Setting up for rb as our pick so as to not reach for a wr.
Ray Fittipaldo: Mims and Shenault still on the board.
Mike: Steelers need either really good height or really good speed at receiver. Those are the 2 traits we lack right now
Brian Batko: Just saw who the Lions are taking, would you all like to know?
pdxJaxon: yep
Brian Batko: D’Andre Swift, RB, Georgia
Paul: Ok... how’d you see the pick?
Brian Batko: Twitter
Ray Fittipaldo: No respect for safeties or interior offensive linemen!
Ray Fittipaldo: All skill guys.
Brian Batko: Someone has to pick Penn State’s Yetur Gross-MAtos, right? I’ll say the G-men here.
Gravel: Why do we say Steelers need WR with speed or height? AB had neither. With AB on squad, no one was saying Steelers needed a WR with speed or height. Don’t get me wrong the best move Steelers made in last few years was ending the AB side show. Just questioning if what is needed is a WR with top talent period.
Zack B.: Cant believe pittman and Higgins are both gone already
Zack B.: Would love to get Mims
Mike: AB had speed. 4.35 is crazy fast. He got faster throughout his career. Look up on YT. Our fastest receiver runs a 4.5 flat (juju last year)
Santa FeRich: Still think we’ll get either Taylor or Akers at 49
Tomservo: AB was transcendent. Can’t expect every small guy to be that capable of getting open. And for most of his tenure he was complemented by a guy who could get deep
Ray Fittipaldo: Giants take McKinney
Brian Batko: Have to put the baby to bed. Be right back. You’re all in good hands with Ray.
Ray Fittipaldo: He got tatoos when he was 6? What?
Ray Fittipaldo: Patriots take Kyle Dugger.
Ray Fittipaldo: Now a run on safeties!
Mike: Wow that was early for dugger! Crazy sparq guy though
Ray Fittipaldo: Panthers take Gross-Matos.
Mike: I’m not a psu guy. Goodell butcher that name?
Tim: Goddell butchers names.
Ray Fittipaldo: I believe so, yes.
Tim: Miami rb here
Ray Fittipaldo: Could be Taylor.
Gerry in TN: Why is Josh Jones falling so far?
Ray Fittipaldo: Not sure, but he’s a good prospect. He is older. Maybe that’s 1 reason.
Mike: I hope not taylor here. He and akers are the only 2 I like in the 2nd
pdxJaxon: Dobbins wouldnt suck in Round 2 if Akers and Taylor are gone
Mike: I just don’t get a good feeling about dobbins. Something doesn’t feel right about him. But I know steelers love their osu guys...
Tim: What do you like best about akers , ray?
Ray Fittipaldo: I just think he’s a complete back. Underrated because he played on a terrible team.
Ray Fittipaldo: Dolphins take Robert Hunt
Cris: Which Tight End will go first?
Ray Fittipaldo: My guess is Kmet, but I think Harrison Bryant is better.
Festus Dillon: Akers is going to be a better pro than probably projected. Seems like a true “Steelers Pick” - does everything pretty well and ran like a 4.47 40
Scott: Jags are going to take one of those RBs we want.
Brian Batko: OK I’m back. All I can assume is that the Patriots’ first draft pick of the post-Tom Brady era was not a Division II safety.
Ray Fittipaldo: Texans take Blacklock
Nick in Long Beach: Hiking my breath on the remaining playmakers.
Brian Batko: Just make sure you wear the right shoes, Nick.
Tim: 3 rb on board and shenault and mims too. If we picked now, which one do colbert and tomlin turn in
Ray Fittipaldo: Good question. I’m guessing Shenault, but those RBs would be tantalizing.
pdxJaxon: if we pick now, we pick Taylor
Ray Fittipaldo: Colts take Taylor.
James: Well, that one hurts.
Dave: Darn
Brian Batko: Wow, didn’t expect the Colts to want a running back. But like the Lions, they saw one that was too good to pass up.
pdxJaxon: shoot....I need a drink
Mike: Shenault would be the only one of those 5 I wouldn’t want. We don’t need another 6’0-6’1 4.5 receiver.
DormontDirtbag: This is like a stress nightmare.
SteelFalcon58: Bummer
benjamin: Yup, I’m hoping for Shenault as well.
Ken: Hey Brian put the Wisconsin LB in the choices!!!
Brian Batko: Zack “Field” Baun
Santa FeRich: Crossing fingers for Akers now
Brian Batko: Cam Akers DESTROYING the field in our poll. I call this the Ray Fittipaldo Effect.
Brian Batko: Twitter is saying Shenault is gone to Jacksonville here.
Ray Fittipaldo: Brian, as you know I’m off to work in TV if it’s Akers. ha ha.
Tim: Taylor gone now, indy loves big ten players. Do Steelers view dobbins same or better than akers. Coming into focus now
Ray Fittipaldo: Both good players. Will be interesting to see if it comes to that.
Gravel: Odds this pick is not a “play-maker” seem to be increasing? OL or Edge more likely?
Brian Batko: Yep. Josh Jones, Ezra Cleveland on the OL might be in play. Zack Baun, Grant Delpit, on defense.
Tim: Gotta be mims, akers or dobbins
Mike: @tim I like that
Dave: I am thinking Baun
Brian Batko: What if all are gone?
Ray Fittipaldo: Wonder why Baun is falling? Maybe because he’s a tweener.
Brian Batko: “Tweener” linebacker could be perfect for the Steelers this year. Makes six picks go a longer way. Same with a tweener guard/tackle or linebacker/safety.
DormontDirtbag: Josh Jones could be our OT for 10 years. Grab him.
Scott: any remaining teams before the Steelers still need a RB?
Brian Batko: Probably just the Bucs, but then again, I didn’t think the Colts or Lions needed one either.
Ray Fittipaldo: Bears take Cole Kmet.
Brian Batko: First tight end! Cole Kmet’s uncle is Jeff Zgonina, former Steeler for you longtime fans who might remember him.
pdxJaxon: nice......good pick bears.
Gerry in TN: Not that impressed with Kmet.
Jaybird: I think the next Steeler pick foreshadows which free agent likely leaves next year. RB, OLB or OT
Paul: Tampa will take Dobbins if he’s there
Jim in vt: I like me some Epenesa. Iowa players are tough and he could be Dupree coverage
Brian Batko: Not sure AJ Epenesa can covert to a stand-up 3-4 edge-rusher in the NFL.
Gerry in TN: Let’s say Mims is gone by 49. Any other WRs worth the 49th pick?
Brian Batko: Chase Claypool, perhaps. Sleepers would be someone like Lynn Bowden or Antonio Gibson, swiss army knifes.
Mike: Epenesa not athletic enough. Could put on weight and be a 3-4 DE though. I think he fits that role more than a 3-4 olb or even a 4-3DE
Ken: Baun would provide quality depth to D.
Jobab: Browns get Delpit
Brian Batko: Grant Delpit is gonna help a TON on the Browns back end. And now the Bucs are reportedly taking Antoine Winfield. Sorry if folks didn’t want any spoilers in here.
Jerry Micco: Zack Baun. Hello everyone.
Mark: Just hold off on Stillers pick
James: With how this draft has gone, I wonder if the Steelers are tempted to trade down?
Panther89: Bowden/Gibson 4th Don’t sleep on Moss
Questfor7: Akers or Claypool would be cool
Johnie: I wanted Delpit.. He goes to the rivals .. Damn
Gerry in TN: I like Bowden but maybe not in the 2nd round. Not a fan of Claypool. Gibson would be interesting since he’s a WR/RB combo.
Turk in MD: Cam Akers for the win!
Ray Fittipaldo: Hamler to the Broncos.
Brian Batko: ANOTHER wide receiver gone in Round 2. And the second in two picks for the Broncos?? Two picks away.
Ray Fittipaldo: OK I have to get on a conference call with the Steelets pick. brian will handle things for a while. Have fun.
Brian Batko: You have fun, Ray.
Mike: Hamler over mims? Weird. I think mims may be a faller. Maybe something on him?
Brian Batko: Yeah I’m not sure about that one. Josh Jones has some competition questions, Zack Baun has some size/athleticism issues, but Mims? Really surprised he’s still on the board.
Ratville: Who are we taking Brian?
Brian Batko: I’m going to guess Chase Claypool ... or Cam Akers. I don’t know!
Brian Batko: Also maybe Denzel Mims. I’m definitely probably sure it’s one of those three.
Gene: No love for Dobbins
Brian Batko: You’re right Gene, could be JK Dobbins too.
Jim: OL pls
Brian Batko: Seahawks just traded with the Jets to move up to No. 48, one spot ahead of the Steelers. Have to think they’re targeting a wideout then, right?
Brian Batko: Chase Claypool is from western Canada and grew up a Seattle fan, fwiw.
Jerry Micco: Interesting dilemma for the Steelers if they want to trade down a couple spots. Might pick up an extra pick and there are several players they might like. Unless they are married to one certain player.
Brian Batko: I don’t hate that idea, Jerry. Atlanta takes a DL in Marlon Davidson.
Brister: Go time. Let’s do this.
The Pope: What might an offer look like Jerry?
The Goatherder: Between Akers and Dobbins, do they choose the higher character person?
Brian Batko: They’re both high character from everything I’ve seen and read.
Scrub: How do teams let other teams know they want to trade out
Brian Batko: Carrier pigeon
Jerry Micco: Depends how far back they go. If it’s a couple spots, maybe a 5th, which they don’t have.
Brian Batko: Steelers are now up.
Mike: No spoilers on the steelers pick guys!
pdxJaxon: ok....here we go
James: OK...let’s see if the Steelers were serious about wanting a RB
The Pope: Make a trade and add a pick
Sergio from Mexico: Go Steelers!!!!
Paul: pick is in!
Cali Steel: Here we STEELERS... HERE WE GO!
Brian Batko: We’re keeping the chat spoiler free.
Guest: ESPN says “pick is in”...
Tom: What! I’m not watching. Let us in Brian
Brian Batko: I’ll say this: If you want to know the Steelers pick before it’s on TV, check Twitter. If not, I’ll post it here once it comes off the sweet lips of our dear commissioner Roger Goodell.
Brian Batko: Steelres pick Notre Dame receiver Chase Claypool
Jerry Micco: Good job, Brian.
Gerry in TN: Oh no! I thought Mims was a better pick than Claypool.
Tomservo: Love it
pdxJaxon: boooooooooooo
Brian Batko: I see we’ve reached a consensus.
Mike: The Steelers are going to be running some interesting stuff with Ebron, McDonald and Claypool all on the roster.
Jerry Micco: That’s a very solid pick. Megatron II.
NC Steel: Clearly this team is NOT serious about improving the running game THIS year. What a disappointment!
Dave: Big Boy...enjoy your last year JuJu
Tomservo: NCSteel... deep threat WR will open up running lanes. It’ll be ok.
Elan: Thoughts on why they chose claypool over mims? Happy with the selection, just trying to see the logic.
Brian Batko: I assume that’s what Kevin Colbert and Mike Tomlin will be asked tonight. Claypool is more physical, I believe. Very willing to play special teams, as he did at Notre Dame. And hey, maybe he’s also your tight end of the future if he adds some weight.
Brister: Thanks for limiting spoilers.
Deep threat. Big body. “Touchdown Machine” - Michael Irving
Guest: Reminds me of Troy Edwards. Awful, could have had JK Dobbins
Tom: Don’t expect much from him in 2020, too raw
Tomservo: All he has to do is run fast in a straight line to be of immense service to this team this year
Mike: There’s our guy akers. Who’s on our radar for 3rd round fast rb’s guys?
Brian Batko: Not sure they’re still gonna go with a running back, Mike. Maybe time to start adding defensive or O-line depth?
FailedRB: Forget it. Steelers blew it on their chance to upgrade running game. It was all talk another toy for an aging QB with a bad arm.
Brian Batko: Spicy hot take.
CA Ciro: How in the world is this monster anything like Troy Edwards?
Brian Batko: Jalen Hurts goes to a PA team after all. But it’s the Eagles.
Jaybird: I think O-line but Gibson could be a RB add in the 3rd
Kevin in PDX: Twice the size of Edwards. Combine numbers only matched by Megatron.
Chris: Bills should go Mims
Brian Batko: Can anyone think of another Canadian who played for the Steelers? All I’m finding is Roy Gerela.
Ratville: Shaun Shuism?
Brian Batko: Good call, Ratville. Not sure if they’ve had any in the non-kicker division.
Frankenmason: Troy Edwards was short and ran a 4.55. Not even close to the same dude. Also had a bad work ethic.
Brian Batko: Chase Claypool seems like a VERY high character guy for what it’s worth. I haven’t seen or read any red flags. Think fans will like him a lot.
Steeler Joe: What’s not to like? Big, fast, good hands.
Johnie: So what you think Brian about Claypool ? Great Pick, little reach maybe? Based on what was left?
Brian Batko: Don’t think it was a reach at all. He was getting some late first-round buzz after running a 4.42 40 at the combine. Anyone who chats with me on our normal Monday slot knows I’d been banging the drum for a receiver from the moment they signed Eric Ebron to address tight end.
Jaybird: I think Chase can be a real match up problem, we opening up opportunities running or throwing the ball
Brian Batko: Had to get someone who can put pressure on James Washington in a position battle, in my opinion. And someone who has a specialty of some sort.
Wooza: the Stillers need a punter
Mike: KC won a championship with no name RB if we can add weapons in throwing games it’s a smart move
Mn Curtain: Any chance of Fournette for a late pick now that we went WR?
Brian Batko: Doesn’t seem like something the Steelers would usually do, but hey, they’ve been more than a little bit more aggressive in recent years. I won’t rule it out.
Bigk825: Disappointed in choice. Akers was available, for a team that must run the ball. Connor is too fragile. Whyte looks good but hardly given a chance. Looks like Benny ball...Snell yeah!
Breezewood: I like the pick, people knocking him are clueless!
Brian Batko: Ha, JK Dobbins to the Ravens now. Steelers fans can keep an eye on one of the running backs they coveted.
Steeler Joe: Ravens are drafting well this year. Give them credit.
Buccs72: Lets hope they are on the phone with Jax trying to get Fournette.
Guest: Ravens do the draft right. They don’t reach
Mike: Ugh I hate the ratbirds. Another good looking draft
Brian Batko: What are the Ravens gonna do with another back? They have Mark Ingram, Gus Edwards and Justice Hill, who all rushed for a million yards against the Steelers in Week 17.
Steeler Joe: Brian, why not Dobbins, you think?
Brian Batko: Apparently, Kevin Colbert has not been blowing smoke about his belief in James Conner.
SMF: Ravens just took JL Dobbins. Steelers are going to eat crow over this stupid move.
Nate: Hey Brian, CBS Sports mentioned 49er RB Matt Brieda in a possible trade. Would you part with day 3 pick if you were the Steelers? Or should they not even worry about RB now?
Brian Batko: Eh, he has speed but I think he’s more a product of 49ers scheme and O-line. Think he’s JAG - just a guy.
Mike: I would be wary of breida. Injury issues
Brian Batko: That, too.
Md. PITT: Who is JL Dobbins?
Brian Batko: I’m not sure.
Buccs72: This second round is looking VERY ugly for the Steelers. Higgins to Cincy...Delpit to the Browns and now Dobbins to Baltimore. OUCH!
George in OKC: Maybe Dobbins works out maybe not. If you look at the Rat Birds drafting record in the last 3-5 years, it hasn’t been all that great
JoePa: Conner will have a bounce back year. He is hearing the criticism. He has the heart of a champ
Tomlin’sMisses: This year was a perfect draft to get a top back. Unfortunately, we like to draft more WRs every draft. But don’t worry they will tell us how they need to improve the running game again next year.
Brian Batko: Next year’s RB crop should be just as good, maybe even better. Travis Etienne from Clemson, Najee Harris from Alabama, Chuba Hubbard from OK State.
Michael: Let’s face it .. our pick was for Ben ... he likes big receivers and seems to have a knack for finding them open
Nitro: Is Ray back from interviews yet? What is his take on how Tomlin and Colbert supported the pick?
Brian Batko: They’re on a call now with OC Randy Fichtner, I believe.
Ray Fittipaldo: Randy on now. Waiting for Claypool after he’s done.
Gary: Michael, Ben had an even better knack for finding AB open, and he’s listed at 5’10”. Claypool is no AB. But he could still be a good 2nd round pick.
George in OKC: I think they will be just fine at RB. The line will move around and be better. Chucks will play LT and Fieler will be left guard. Ben will be back. They will run the ball better this year with what they have on the roster
Brian Batko: Chuks will play RT, if he becomes a starter. But either way, with a healthy Ben and improved OL, James Conner can thrive again ... if he’s healthy, too.
Tomservo: Finally George someone who gets it. With an improved and vertically capable passing attack their running game will improve
Jeff M: Last time the forced a pick like this was Burns. When they draft BPA they get Heyward and Decastro. When force a position the end up with Burns and Jarvis Jones. Would Baun have fit with the Steelers?
Ray Fittipaldo: Randy said he likes Claypool’s size, wingspan and speed. When he ran a sun 4.4 at the combine Randy just assumed he wouldn’t be there at 49.
Brian Batko: Sure Baun would fit, but if he’s so clearly the BPA, why isn’t anyone else picking him either?
Ron: Last year would have been tough for any O line and RB. Defenses just stacked the line and challenged us to beat them in the air. And we couldn’t.
Nate: Brian, since you pretty much called pick 49, who do you got for pick 102?
Ray Fittipaldo: Randy said Claypool probably more comfortable outside but can play inside too eventually.
Brian Batko: Geez, more than 40 picks out still, but OK. Shot in the dark is they go safety and take the local kid from New Castle, Geno Stone. A box safety.
Josh: The Steelers track record in last 10 years drafting and developing receivers after first round is probably best in nfl. I wouldn’t be so harsh on the pick. I personally wanted a rb but I trust their judgment on receivers.
Brian Batko: This is the first time since 2012 the Steelers used their first draft pick on an offensive player (David DeCastro). First time since 2006 they used it on a receiver (Santonio Holmes). Ninth year in a row they’ve taken a wideout. First time EVER they’ve used one of their top two picks on a WR four years in a row.
Nitro: Ray - Did Randy say Steelers had round 1 grade on Claypool?
Brian Batko: Oh goodness, I hope they don’t put that on anymore non-first round picks.
Ray Fittipaldo: no
Brian Batko: Denzel Mims to the Jets. He’ll be compared to Chase Claypool, methinks. To me, the Steelers couldn’t go wrong with either one of those big, fast targets, but I might’ve given the edge to Mims.
Mike: There goes mims. Time will tell which guy we should have picked
Entmd: Any chance there is a RB at 102 that is an upgrade to current roster?
Brian Batko: Maybe, but I don’t think I’d do it. Would proceed with my current backfield group if I’m the Steelers. They’ve never used a fifth-round pick or higher on a running back four years in a row in the modern era.
Nate: Ray, did anyone ask Randy if it came down to Mims vs. Claypool?
Ray Fittipaldo: no
Michael: Claypool seems like a better NFL body out of the box as opposed to Mims
Brian Batko: Steelers need special teamers, too. Pretty clear to me they put some value on Claypool’s versatility in addition to just his receiver skills.
Guest: I liked Uche. Wish the Steelers got him instead of the Pats
Tomservo: If they take a safety has to be someone who specializes in coverage so Edmunds can move to Barrons role.
Ratville: Ben and Juju have already spoken to Claypool. Good for chemistry.
Barley: How is this team going 10-6 with the same OL and same OL coach, pray tell?
Brian Batko: They won’t have the same OL.
Ralph: Was it wise to take a wr who is a bit of a project in a year there will be no OTA’s and limited training camp/ preseason?
Brian Batko: I’m not sure he’s a major project, Ralph. Not a finished product, but he can help right away, I think.
Guest: OL or DT in 3rd round? Everyone wants splashy picks but let’s fill needs.
Brian Batko: Addressed OL in free agency and acquired a defensive lineman, albeit an end, via trade. I’m not sold they go with either position in the third. But they do have options.
CA Ciro: Much less of a project than Mims who was in a non-pro style/limited offense.
James: I’m thinking LB in the 3rd
Nitro: Brian - Amplify on help right away. Is he your #3 receiver? Catches projection?
Brian Batko: No clue on a catch projection, but I think they’ll be able to use him in the red zone and on deep balls right away. Should be a little more proficient at running a go route than Johnny Holton, no offense to him.
Ratville: Claypool has virtually the qualities in size, height, and speed that Megaton had. We got a playmaker!
Dante: Does it look like another pass happy offense next year? Hmmm...
Ray Fittipaldo: OK just got off a call with Claypool. Can answer a few questions if you have any.
Brian Batko: That’s a big offseason question. But hey, Claypool is known for being a good blocker, too. That’s surely something else the Steelers noticed.
Ralph: Is there room for four 2nd pick WR’s, and your big free agent TE to be on the field? Seems like someone will be forced to sit.
Entmd: Ray, any mention of Claypool potentially moving into a more tight end like roll?
Ray Fittipaldo: No. Randy said he’s more comfortable outside at this point, but he was used inside in the slot some. And he thinks in time he can be used in the slot in the NFL.
Nitro: Ray - Re Claypool call? Anything new info or just trite banter?
Ray Fittipaldo: It’s a crazy time for him. Not much gleaned, but I’m working on a profile that hopefully will appear in Sunday’s paper so stay tuned for that.
Guest: Ray—does Claypool see himself as a WR or TE?
Ray Fittipaldo: No one asked him about TE.
Tomservo: And now we can move JuJu back into the slot where he’s most effective
Ray Fittipaldo: You might be onto something there, Tomservo. At least on occasion.
Tim: Field stretcher like we have been made to believe primary need over rb. Does he fit the bill, ray? Ease my disappointment in not picking a rb
Ray Fittipaldo: Definitely. Randy said he ran a sub 4.4 at combine though I saw official time was 4.42. Either way, he’s fast.
Nitro: Ray - Make anything of the fact that it was Randy and not WR coach on the call? Just because he was 1st pick?
Ray Fittipaldo: No not at all. Coordinators usually talk about the higher picks and the position coaches about the lower picks.
Tim: Disappointment over dobbins as I’m buckeye based. Gut punch after ratbirds picked him. Akers would have been fine too.
Ray Fittipaldo: Not too far off on Akers with him going to the Rams in early 50s. I just think the Steelers wanted a WR with speed.
Sergio from mexico: Hello Ray... would you trade up to get Zach Baun?
Ray Fittipaldo: I’m not sure what’s going on with him. SOmeone mentioned a diluted urine sample earlier in the chat. IDK. Seems like there are some concerns because he was a borderline first-round talent.
Jaybird: Gibson didn’t make it to the end of the third....
Mike: Ugh gibson...wanted him for a rb
Brian Batko: Yeah, he’s explosive. From Last Chance U, too!
Carl: CBS sports actually had Antonio Gibson as our pick at 102.
Steelknight: I’ve submitted multiple who do you have to know to get posted.
Brian Batko: You have to know Carl. And Mike. And Jaybird.
Brian Batko: Really though, the turnout on here tonight has been twice as strong as last night, which was great as well. You guys are appreciated.
TJWhosYourMomma: You have to have good questions or comments to get posted :)
Tommy: Who is the odd receiver out?
Brian Batko: Deon Cain or Ryan Switzer, unless they decide to keep 6.
Ray Fittipaldo: Yeah I guess Cain because he’s more of an outside guy like Claypool. Extra practice squad spots though.
pdxJaxon: Cain will be on the outside looking in. Big Ben loves Switzer
coolgem: Isn’t that great? Picked up another TE in effect in Claypool. Thought Rooney said the steelers were going to improve their running game. Now they have a guy who will take days before he finally gets off the LOS. He will need to take a hot shower and get the glue off his body so he can separate.
Steelknight: Lovely...if unfair. No value left at RB I say they need big DT or DE at 102
Nitro: I thought the Steelers released Switzer? Is he still under contract?
Brian Batko: Yes, he’s still on the team.
Ray Fittipaldo: Ok I missed about 20 picks when I was on the phone with Randy and Claypool. What’s likely for the Steelers at 102?
Jaybird: Probably the start of a run on OL but there are a few that would be nice at 102
CA Ciro: Best player available at OL, DL, ILB, or OLB.
pdxJaxon: 102 is a crap shoot. I think ILB, Edge, OT maybe NT
Ray Fittipaldo: Terrell Burgess go yet?
Brian Batko: No, he’s available. One of our savvy chatters above talked me out of Geno Stone. How about the even more intriguing local kid, Kenny Robinson? Had two picks playing in the XFL after being dismissed from WVU for academic fraud.
Mikey: thanks for doing this guys. My humble opinion
Golden, CO fan: LB Zach Baun
Brian Batko: I’ve gotta believe there’s no chance Zack Baun makes it to 102. Many had him going in the first.
pdxJaxon: Ravens are gonna be scary
pdxJaxon: finally Josh Jones goes.....what a steal unless there was something we didnt know
Ray Fittipaldo: Yeah I liked him.
George in OKC: Anfernne Jennings still on the board at 102 has to be a consideration
Steelknight: Leki Fotu might still be around at 102
Jerry Micco: Ray, your a former OL. Think they go there (OL) at 102? I think DL, but may not have a player worth it that late.
Ray Fittipaldo: I think they can go a lot of different ways. S/ILB, OLB, IOL or OT. Probably just depends on who is there. I had them taking Nick Harris, center out of Washington in the fourth round in my mock. Did Harris go yet?
George in OKC: Let’s pump the brakes on how well the rat birds have drafted so far
pdxJaxon: not yet Ray
Jaybird: Interior Ol still on the board, Cushenberry, Biadaz and J Jackson and Lemienx
pdxJaxon: Troy Dye, Akeem Davis-Gaither, Bradlee Anea,....lots of good picks available
Golden, CO fan: S K’Von Wallace is available
Ray Fittipaldo: There goes Baun to the Saints
Steelknight: How about Davon Hamilton?
Ray Fittipaldo: Just went
George in OKC: Baun fell for a reason. Just wonder why?
Ray Fittipaldo: Jeremiah just said medical concerns. Also mentioned diluted urine sample
Steeler Joe: Is there ANY chance another WR could be in the cards? A Lynn Bowden Jr. or a Gandy-Golden type?
Ray Fittipaldo: Can’t see that. Too many other needs.
Brian Batko: They might make Lynn Bowden their No. 3 quarterback though
Shawn: Rd 1 m Fitzpatrick Rd 2 Claypool Ok great start
Mikey: Mikey doesn’t like our pick. Need a reliable RB for 2020 not 2021. Is a trade forthcoming? Fournette release anticipated?
Brian Batko: There might be reliable RBs on the scrap heap going into the season and during if James Conner gets hurt. I think the Steelers are being smart about that de-valued position.
Jaybird: Upcoming 3rd and 4th round picks are important for needed depth on OL, DL and maybe Edge
Hank: Ray, would you consider Zack Moss if he was still there at 102 or is he just more of what we already have at RB?
Ray Fittipaldo: He’s OK. Some are higher on him than others. Productive player in college.
Dollar G: Hey Ray, who the STEELERS pick next ? You got one right last year, I’m giving you a chance now - lol
Ray Fittipaldo: There goes Hennesy to the Falcons.
Sussie: Ray wouldnt be worth trading up about now for DT Gallimore ? It is a steal in my opinion.. The Ravens got theirs a few picks ago
Ray Fittipaldo: That’d be two Canadians!
Steelknight: How about Cushenberry?
Ray Fittipaldo: I like Cushenberry.
Gene: How about Troy Dye
Ray Fittipaldo: He’d be in that 3-4 round range.
brett: Is it too early for Philips from LSU at ILB
Ray Fittipaldo: No he’s in that 3-4 range too.
Dale: How about Terrell Lewis or Curtis Weaver?
Ray Fittipaldo: I’d take Lewis over Weaver, but Lewis has had some injuries. More potential if he’s healthy.
George in OKC: Ray! Cushenberry, Gallimore, or OLB Lewis on the bored at 102. Who are you taking?
Ray Fittipaldo: Probably Cushenberry.
Brian Batko: Ray, I just remembered that I chose Chase Claypool as my Steelers pick on our last episode of the North Shore Drive podcast. Do you recall?
Rc: Can someone bring me a beer ?
Brian Batko: Rog just mispronounced Lynn BOW-den. Long O. Anyway, he’s on the Raidahs now. A Gruden grinder.
Ray Fittipaldo: I should, but I don’t! Nice pick.
Steeler Joe: Brian: Regarding Bowden, that was my thought as well. Third QB, fifth WR, gadget plays, wildcat...
Hank: Since we missed out on Taylor, how about taking one of the guys that helped pave the way for all his yards with Biadasz?
pdxJaxon: is Chase Claypool the DK Metcalf of this year ?
Brian Batko: Biadasz is a badazz.
Ray Fittipaldo: Wouldn’t be a bad thing if that happened. Metcalf had a nice rookie year. Scored a rather big TD versus the Steelers as I recall.
CA Ciro: Claypool has better hands than Metcalf. Take it from a Seattle resident, he dropped a lot of balls.
pdxJaxon: didnt know that about Metcalf. Just heard he wasnt great with the route tree.
Brian Batko: The Raiders just drafted a third receiver??
Ray Fittipaldo: Gallimore to Cowboys
pdxJaxon: Yeah....3 WRs in the first 3 rounds. Weird. Gotta gather more weapons for Mariota eh ;-)
Gary: So the Steelers traded the 19th in the 3rd round to Denver? What did they get in return?
Brian Batko: Moved up to draft Devin Bush.
Ray Fittipaldo: Broncos take Cushenberry.
Ray Fittipaldo: Surprised he lasted this long.
Hank: I wonder if the data supports teams that are more aggressive and move up in drafts thus losing later picks but getting your target vs teams that have a tendency to trade back and gather more picks...what do you guys prefer?
Paul: Do you like any DTs left on the board?
Brian Batko: I do, but not at 102.
Ray Fittipaldo: All depends on your needs. The Steelers felt like they needed Bush last year and made the move. I honestly think it depends on the situation.
Tim: Ray and brian biggest need where we sit now. OL, DL or LB
Brian Batko: My opinion, LB.
pdxJaxon: I agree ILB and Edge Both very important right now. Get OT and DL a bit later
Ray Fittipaldo: Yeah LB or OL and then DL later.
Brian Batko: Malik Harrison and Akeem Davis-Gaither would be tough for me to pass up, because I think there’s a fairly big drop-off at ILB after them.
JoePa: Are you guys getting any drunks trying to chat?
Brian Batko: I assumed you’re all drunk.
Tomservo: Would rather they take a coverage safety so they can move Edmunds to flex role. He was the weak link in coverage last year.
Ray Fittipaldo: That could be the move, too.
Ray Fittipaldo: Wow Blackmon goes in the third. Coming off knee injury.
Jaybird: I called Harrison an hour ago, still hanging on
Ray Fittipaldo: Colts having a nice draft I think
George in OKC: RaY, Brian, ILB Phillips, OLB Jennings, or Biadazs at 102?
Ray Fittipaldo: I’d go Jennings or Biadisz
Jakester: We are not drunk. We are depressed at this draft and self-medicating. Let’s get another WR.
Brian Batko: Yikes, what are you all gonna do if the Steelers take Jacob Eason next?
Ray Fittipaldo: Moss goes to Bills.
Tomservo: ugh...was hoping Blackmon would be there for us. Any chance Burgess lasts to 102.
Ray Fittipaldo: I think Burgess would be a good pick. About 18 picks away...
Jaybird: Brian I would go to bed and wait for 2021
Michael: Malik Harrison out there ... (I’m in Columbus lol)
pdxJaxon: If Duverney is still available its gonna make me more depressed that we didnt take Akers in 2.
Brian Batko: Claypool and Duvernay are completely different receivers. Not sure that’s really a fair revision.
Hank: Agree with Ray...I think the Colts could be really good next year.
Brian Batko: Patriots take another edge-rusher. Hmmm...
George in OKC: Hey Ray/Brian, the Patriots just drafted Derrick Rivers again. Remember when people were wanting Pittsburgh to draft him in the first/second round?
Brian Batko: *Derek Rivers, from Youngstown State. Kind of.
Dale: How about the Prince for OL??
Brian Batko: Prince Tega Wanogha would get my stamp of approval.
Dollar G: Steelers next pick is JENNINGS from Alabama - watch what I tell ya.
Brian Batko: Patriots just took him though, so that might be tough.
Dude: I could see eason Batko with the way its going lol
Gene: What do you all think about Evans from Appalachian St
Brian Batko: Explosive small school back, but also pretty small himself. Not sure he’s a huge upgrade over Kerrith Whyte.
Nick in Long Beach: What QBs are still on the board?
Brian Batko: Jacob Eason and Jake Fromm are probably the only two who still have a shot of going tonight.
Jakester: Yes I like Prince. Would be solid pick and I loved Purple Rain.
Mike: You want to run better .... improve OL. Take Baddazz
Tomservo: If they go edge rusher, Anae seems like a good fit.
Brian Batko: He does, but I’m leaning off-ball linebacker at 102. Still a couple highly rated ones there in Akeem Davis-Gaither and Malik Harrison.
Mike: Why does it feel like the Pats and Ravens always draft players we want ?
Ray Fittipaldo: Yeah saw the Patriots took Jennings. As most of you know I had Jennings as a player I liked from January on.
Tim: Bill o’brien seemed pretty upset and pumped out a nice f bomb while his kid sat quietly next to him. Nice
Ray Fittipaldo: Missed that, but these kids have been a big part of the show this year!
James: Roger Goodell looks like he might fall asleep
Ray Fittipaldo: Was just about to type that. Slumped back in his chair like he’s on his fourth glass of wine.
Mikey: Goodwill looks like he’s losing interest
Danny Santa Monica: After watching a 20+ minute long breakdown of Chase Claypool highlights from Chris Simms I was convinced- I think we really scored a fantastic player. A major weapon. They were going ga-ga over him. Does he have any similarities to Larry Fitzgerald? Or Megatron?
Ray Fittipaldo: He said he watched a lot of Calvin Johnson tape in college. Also Julio Jones and JuJu.
Chris: Here come Ravens to sreal Harrison
Ray Fittipaldo: Ravens take Duvernay!
Brian Batko: Yeah, Baltimore is good at this I think.
Ray Fittipaldo: Now Steelers have to deal with him twice a year.
Emilio: They are beating us badly.. They have the best draft so far in my opinion..
Ray Fittipaldo: Well, the Steelers have only had one pick
pdxJaxon: Ravens Draft is incredible
CA Ciro: Based on the Ravens record drafting WRs, Duvernay’s career is already over.
Ray Fittipaldo: Ha ha you’re right about. WRs go to Baltimore to wither.
Gene: If Burgess is there at 102 I would love it
Tim: ratbirds taking all the players i wanted for the black n gold.
Nick in Long Beach: Will Steelers give Claypool Heeeeth’s uniform #83?
Brian Batko: He doesn’t have too many options at this point. By my count it’s 11, 80, 83, 84, 85, 86, 88 up for grabs.
Hank: I think the Ravens brass subscribes to the PG mock drafts for their scouting intel!
Ray Fittipaldo: Those Ravens are smart!
Nitro: Better value pick Burgess or Prince? Better pick for 2020 Steelers needs?
Ray Fittipaldo: Prince spent a lot of time on the ground in the games I watched him. I’d go Burgess, but I think Prince can be good with some work. GOnna take time though.
Jobab: The ravens didn’t need a running back or a DL. We’ll see how good Duvernay turns out to be. Queen was certainly a good pick.
Mikey: Claypool wore 83 in college. Its available per Day
Brian Batko: Available but one of those numbers that’s attached to a beloved former Steeler. So we’ll see.
Steelknight: Harrison would have a chasnce to displace Williams as a rookie
Ray Fittipaldo: Ben Bartsch still on the board.
Michael: Ravens have had 4 picks .. we have had one ... so naturally it would make ‘em look like the Swami
BensBeard: What about Dye at Linebacker?
Ray Fittipaldo: Yep this is about his range
pdxJaxon: Dye would be really good replacement for Barronn
Ray Fittipaldo: Pretty soon Roger is gonna be laying down with a pillow under his head.
Steve: Didn’t Cobi Hamilton wear #83 post Heath Miller era?
Brian Batko: Yes and Zach Gentry was going to wear it, but then decided not to, citing Heaht.
Lambert Lunatic: As long as Claypool doesn’t wear #14 (Coates, Sweed, etc.)!!!
Picksixlisberger: Someone should give the Comish a random test, looks like he might have just burned one.
Ray Fittipaldo: Browns take J Phillps from LSU. He’s an ILB.
Dale: Who do you take Ray: Burgess,Prince, Davis-Gaither, or Biadasz ??
Ray Fittipaldo: Burgess or Biadicsz
Dan Druff: LSU and Bama are dominating this draft
Michael: Philips not a big coverage guy .. we have VW ... go Malik Harrison
Steve: How about Harrison from OSU?
Tim: Wait for it, ratbirds take harrison
Ray Fittipaldo: Yep Ravens take Harrison.
Brian Batko: Three more picks until the Steelers
pdxJaxon: oh FRICK....are you KIDDING me ?
Michael: Boom
Ray Fittipaldo: OK guys. Brian is going to take it from here. I’m signing off for the night. Have to get on a conference call with Tomlin and Colbert after the pick is made. Thanks for joining in the past two nights.
Brian Batko: Bye, Ray. Ask some good questions.
Mismatch: Thanks Ray. This has been great!!
Brian Batko: UConn, eh?
Nate: Thanks Ray!
pdxJaxon: thanks Ray. have a great night
Jim: OL OL OL
BringBackWeegie: What do you think, Brian? Punter or long snapper?
Brian Batko: Punter
Nathan: What are the best running backs still available??
Brian Batko: No one real enticing. Anthony McFarland who played for Matt Canada at Maryland. Eno Benjamin from ASU.
Katya: Patriots swoop in!
James: Hmmm....So anything approximating a negative comment about the Steelers are not posted?
Brian Batko: There have been plenty of negative Steelers comments and pro Ravens comments, James.
Sergio from mexico: Hey BB... how come Balt and NE always have tons of picks and we only have 6, 7 or so...
Brian Batko: They are good at working the comp pick formula.
Jaybird: Ok I’m on the Troy Dye band wagon
Clyde: Even w/o negative comments only about 1/2 of my comments have been posted.
Brian Batko: That’s a pretty good hit rate, given the number of chatters here, trust me.
Brian Batko: Alex Highsmith, edge-rusher out of Charlotte, is the Steelers pick.
Gracias: This is almost over so thanks for the Chat Brian. This has been the first one I have participated in and it has been great fun.
Who: Who?
BringBackWeegie: Hope he can play ILB too!
Mike: Complete reach or hidden gem ?
Gerry in TN: Bud Dupree’s replacement?
Brian Batko: Don’t think he’s a reach, this is about where he was projected by the draft gurus. And Louis Riddick just called him “perfect” for the Steelers.
Brian Batko: Reminds me of Sutton Smith pick last year with the production, but Alex Highsmith has legitimate NFL size. I think.
Steelknight: Big uggggggghhhhhh. Another slow footed dog. Can you say VW ?
Jaybird: Good Pick! He had rankings above Edge players already selected in the second round
Brian Batko: Curtis Weaver, Bradlee Anae, Khalid Kareem were the other top edge-rushers still available. Instead, Steelers go with a former walk-on in Highsmith.
Nick in Long Beach: On to Day 3! Will there be another chat tomorrow? Thanks BB!
Brian Batko: No chat tomorrow, Nick. I’m running on fumes as is.
Steve: With no major holes to fill, I think they’re doing ok so far.
Michael: Looks like the kid has good football instincts and might only need to add 5-10 lbs
Brian Batko: Dayton Flyers!
Josh: Thanks to both Brian for your Efforts with all of us tonight.. Hoping our picks are good for years to come.. Lets see who the ravens pick again..
Brian Batko: OK folks, we just hit midnight and rolled over into Saturday here in Pittsburgh, plus the third round has ended. Fun Day 2 chat with you all, but Ray, Gerry and I will be working on breaking down the four Day 3 picks, so no chat tomorrow. Thanks for joining us last night and tonight. Check back often at post-gazette.com for the rest of our coverage.
