The new XFL has its first quarterback, and it’s a former Steeler.
The revived football league, announced last year, will sign seven other QBs before its draft in October, but the first is ex-Steelers backup Landry Jones.
“We’re excited to welcome Landry to the XFL as our first player and first quarterback,” XFL Commissioner and CEO Oliver Luck in a statement. “He’s an accomplished athlete with outstanding college credentials and pro experience, and his heart and desire to play football epitomizes the type of individual we want in the XFL.”
The Steelers drafted Jones in the fourth round in 2013 out of Oklahoma. Last offseason, Joshua Dobbs beat Jones in the competition to back up Ben Roethlisberger.
Jones also had stints with the Oakland Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars.
“I’m looking forward to joining the XFL and playing the game I love,” Jones said. “I can’t wait to suit up.”
