As expected, Steelers place Ryan Shazier on physically unable to perform list

The Steelers have placed linebacker Ryan Shazier on the reserve/physically unable to perform list, a move designed to create a spot on the 90-man roster now instead of waiting for training camp.

Shazier was not going to play this season anyway, so the move is not a surprise. But the Steelers needed room to sign their draft choices and rookie free agents to comply with the 90-player limit.

Shazier, who is recovering from a serious spinal injury, will receive a split salary of $473,000 now and the remainder later.

• The Steelers on Monday also announced the signing of safety P.J. Locke, an undrafted free agent out of Texas. Locke played in 14 games in 2018, finishing with 77 tackles, and was an honorable mention All-Big 12 selection.
