The Steelers released veteran quarterback Zach Mettenberger Monday, two days after they drafted Josh Dobbs and added free agent Nick Schuessler.
Mettenberger served as the third-string quarterback last season behind Ben Roethlisberger and Landry Jones, but he never played in a game. The Steelers added Mettenberger last fall when they claimed him off waivers. He played for the Tennessee Titans in 2014 and 2015.
The Steelers selected Dobbs out of Tennessee in the fourth round of the NFL draft Saturday and plan to develop him behind Roethlisberger and Jones. Schuessler was Deshaun Watson’s backup at Clemson and will likely go to training camp with the Steelers.
Dobbs and Schuessler are expected to take part in Steelers rookie minicamp next weekend.
