Source: Steelers free up $2M by restructuring Marcus Gilbert's contract

The Steelers restructured offensive lineman Marcus Gilbert’s contract in order to create more cap space, according to a source. The Steelers created more than $2 million in cap space for the 2016 season by converting Gilbert’s base salary into a signing bonus.

The Steelers recently signed Vince Williams to a new deal and might need the space to negotiate other deals before and during the season.

Gilbert signed a five-year, $30 million contract in August 2014. His deal runs through the 2019 season. Gilbert's 2016 salary was reduced from $3.95 million to $760,000.

The Steelers are not expected to sign former cornerback Keenan Lewis after a physical and MRI of his troublesome hip region.

The Steelers wanted to see why Lewis has missed so much playing and practice time since the middle of the 2015 season.

Apparently, his chronic injury was enough to dissuade the Steelers from adding him to the roster.
