Betting on Super Bowl 59: Popular Markets Explained

There are multiple ways to bet on the big game. Some of the more popular, traditional ones include moneylines, spread bets, totals, prop bets and player props. You can also find some interesting miscellaneous prop bets for the Super Bowl. You can also combine bets into a parlay for a higher payout.

Moneyline

For sports betting, the moneyline is essentially betting on which team or player wins a contest. For example, for Super Bowl 59, the Chiefs are a -120 favorite, according to DraftKings Sportsbook, meaning a $100 bet on them to win the game returns $83.33. The Eagles are a +100 underdog, meaning a $100 bet returns $100 if they win.

Spread

The point spread is the expected final score difference between two teams. For Super Bowl 59, for example, the Chiefs are a 1.5-point favorite. This means that they would need to beat the Eagles by at least two points to “cover the spread” and for that bet to win. On the flip side, as a 1.5-point underdog, the Eagles would need to either win the game or lose by one point to cover.

Total Points

This market signifies how many total points will be scored by the two teams combined in the game. For instance, on DraftKings, the Super Bowl 59 total is set at 48.5 points. If a user were to bet the over, the Chiefs and Eagles would need to combine for at least 49 points in order for that bet to cash.

Prop Bets

Prop bets are wagers based on something happening (or not happening) within a single game. For instance, Super Bowl 59 has quite a few prop bets you might not see during typical regular season play. Users can bet on whether the pregame coin toss will land on heads or tails; which team will win the coin toss; and whether a team will run a flea flicker, among many, many others.

Player Props

Player props are like other prop bets but specific to a player. This can be related to scoring touchdowns, reaching a certain number of yards, reaching a certain number of attempts, or many other options. For Super Bowl 59, for example, you can bet on how many rushing yards Saquon Barkley will total, how many catches Travis Kelce might reel in, or even how many field goals Harrison Butker can kick.

Same-Game Parlay

Users can add multiple single bets into a same-game parlay, which increases the payout but also makes them less likely to cash. For instance, let’s say you have three bets with odds of +100 apiece. If you made all three of those bets as separate single bets and two out of the three cashed, you could collect those two. But if you had put those bets in a parlay together for total odds of +700, all three of the bets would need to hit for the ticket to cash.

Futures Bets

Futures are just what they sound like: betting on things that are going to happen in the future. Is Super Bowl 59 already getting you excited for next season’s big game? Or maybe you don’t think Philadelphia gets it done this year, and next season is theirs? Then you can bet on the 2026 Super Bowl at much longer odds because it’s so far away and hopefully collect down the line.

Understanding Super Bowl Odds

Odds may appear confusing at first, but they make a lot more sense once you get the hang of them. At its simplest, a bet with a minus (-) sign in front of it is the favorite and has a higher chance of happening based on what the sportsbook has set. A bet with a plus (+) sign in front of it means that the bet is the underdog and likely has a steeper hill to climb.

Most sportsbooks will tally your returns for you based on your wagers, but if you want to get a step ahead and know exactly what you’d be getting back in the event your bets win, here’s a quick guide:

A favorite bet shows how much money you would need to wager in order to win $100. For instance, let’s say a bet has odds of -120. That means a user would need to bet $120 in order to get $100 back. In that case, a $100 wager would return $83.33. An underdog bet shows the number you’ll win if you bet $100. For example, if you bet $100 and the odds are +230, you’d receive $230 back if you won.
