The Pirates have recalled Chase Shugart from Triple-A Indianapolis, sources confirmed to the Post-Gazette on Tuesday afternoon. Shugart will replace Endy Rodriguez, who has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a right index finger laceration, on the active roster.
A 28-year-old right-hander, Shugart joins the Pirates for the second time this season. He pitched three times in his first stint with the big-league club, allowing no runs over 3⅔ innings. Shugart allowed a pair of hits and walks over that stretch while striking out two batters.
Rodriguez, meanwhile, heads to the injured list with a finger injury that required stitches. The injury was sustained in the first inning of Monday’s game at PNC Park, which the Pirates went on to win by a final score of 10-3.
Splitting time between catcher and first base, Rodriguez has played in 15 games this season, hitting .178 with a pair of RBIs. His defense has been an issue at both spots, committing a total of four errors so far. He returns to the injured list, where he spent nearly all of last season as he recovered from elbow surgery.
With Rodriguez on the shelf, the Pirates will likely continue to give more playing time to Henry Davis, who was recalled from Triple-A on Saturday. Behind Davis is Joey Bart, who remains sidelined from a back injury he sustained Friday in Cincinnati. Manager Derek Shelton told reporters Tuesday afternoon Bart is still being evaluated by the team’s medical staff.
The club has placed catcher Abrahan Gutierrez on the taxi squad in case Bart needs to be placed on the injured list. A 25-year-old backstop, Gutierrez is hitting .385 in 13 games this season with Triple-A Indianapolis.
