MIAMI — Shortly after finishing up his weekly radio show, Pirates general manager Ben Cherington got back to the grindstone.
During Sunday afternoon’s game against the Marlins, the Pirates traded cash considerations to the Dodgers for right-handed reliever Andre Jackson, who was designated for assignment on June 20. Jackson, 27, appeared in seven games for the Dodgers this season, posting a 6.62 ERA. He’s made 14 career MLB appearances, accruing a 4.15 ERA across 39 innings.
As part of the transaction, Jackson been optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis. He made 11 appearance for Oklahoma City, the Dodgers’ Triple-A affiliate, this year and produced a 5.86 ERA with Los Angeles’ top minor-league club.
In a corresponding move to make room for Jackson on the 40-man roster, infielder/outfielder Mark Mathias was designated for assignment. Mathias has appeared in 22 games for the Pirates this season, hitting .231 with four runs batted in, three stolen bases and two doubles. The journeyman utility player has posted a .273/.393/.384 slash line for Indianapolis this season as well.
