The new scoreboard at PNC Park is finally coming together.
The Pirates released a video Wednesday showing construction of the 83,000-pound, 142-foot screen announced last July that will cover the entirety of the left field display area that once housed a smaller screen as well as several permanent ad billboards. Check it out.

“We know from our many interactions with fans that the way in which they consume the game action is ever changing. The new scoreboard, facia displays and sound system will allow our fans to be even more immersed in the action on and off the field,” team president Travis Williams said in a news release. “It is important that we continue to build upon and enhance everything that makes PNC Park a unique and special place. Last offseason we successfully debuted the revamped river walk. This season we are excited to unveil additional fan focused enhancements, beginning with the new sights and sounds our fans will experience this season.”
The screen is being paid for in part by a reimbursement to the Pirates from the Sports & Exhibition Authority, as well as a $1 ticket surcharge for ballpark improvements that the authority approved last year. The total cost has been estimated at $5.6 million.
Overall, the Pirates said the new screen will be nearly double the size of the old one and promises to have much finer resolution when it debuts for the team’s April 7 home opener against the Chicago White Sox.
The club is also upgrading fascia ribbon boards that span the upper decks of the stadium, their video control room and electrical automation system as part of their offseason renovations.
The scoreboard is being manufactured by Mitsubishi Electric’s Diamond Vision Systems, which is based in Warrendale.
