The Pirates made three roster moves this past week, according to the International League transactions page.
Infielders Jake Elmore and Corban Joseph, along with catcher Steve Baron were outrighted to Class AAA Indianapolis.
The set of moves opens three spots on the 40-man roster, which the Pirates could use to sign players during the offseason. Elmore, Joseph, and Baron can become free agents, but it’s possible that one or all three could return to the Pirates organization for spring training.
Elmore, 32, has played in 217 big league games over six seasons, including 20 for the Pirates this year. He got off to a 1-for-20 start but hit .333 in September.
Joseph, 30, spent time with three teams in 2019. The Pirates claimed Joseph off waivers on Sept. 16 and he played in nine games.
Baron, 28, played in seven games with 10 plate appearances for the Pirates. He saw extra playing time because of injuries to Jacob Stallings and Elias Diaz. Baron's season ended when he got hit in the face by an errant pick-off attempt on Sept. 28. Baron had surgery to repair a fractured lower mandible and expects to be ready for spring training.
The Pirates now have 46 players on their roster. The team has until five days after the end of the World Series to cut the list to 40 players.
