Pirates minor league report: Travis Swaggerty, Jared Oliva have big weeks

A look at how the Pirates’ top 10 prospects, according to MLB.com, fared in the past week (July 2-8).

1. Mitch Keller • RHP • 23 • B/T: R/R • Ht/Wt: 6-2, 210 • Class AAA Indianapolis

Keller allowed six earned runs on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings in a start against the Toledo Mud Hens, walking one and striking out six.

2. Ke’Bryan Hayes • 3B • 22 • B/T: R/R • Ht/Wt: 6-1, 210 • Indianapolis

Jason Mackey: Major League Baseball might have an NBA problem

Hayes played six games across two levels and hit .238 with a double and a home run in 21 at-bats. A left index finger injury had kept Hayes out for 18 days.

3. Travis Swaggerty • OF • 21 • B/T: L/L • Ht/Wt: 5-11, 180 • Class A Bradenton

Swaggerty had a tremendous week, hitting .550 in five games and 20 at-bats while striking out just twice and posting an OPS of 1.171.

4. Oneil Cruz • SS • 20 • B/T: L/R • Ht/Wt: 6-6, 175 • Bradenton

Having not played since April because of a fractured left foot, Cruz had another strong showing; he hit .417 with two home runs and four RBIs in 12 at-bats spread over three games.

5. Kevin Kramer • 2B • 25 • B/T: L/R • Ht/Wt: 6-0, 200 • Indianapolis

Kramer hit .250 in six games while also walking six times. Was promoted to the big club on Sunday, walked and scored a run.

6. Calvin Mitchell • OF • 20 • B/T: L/L • Ht/Wt: 6-0, 209 • Bradenton

Mitchell homered but hit just .231 in 13 at-bats over four games. He’s hitting just .183 since the start of June.

7. Luis Escobar • RHP • 23 • B/T: R/R • Ht/Wt: 6-1, 205 • Indianapolis

Had a terrific outing in relief on July 3, allowing two hits and no runs while striking out five over 2 2/3 innings at Louisville, earning a promotion to the big club on Saturday.

8. Jason Martin • OF • 23 B/T: L/R • Ht/Wt: 5-9, 185 • Indianapolis

Hit .350 with two doubles, a home run and five RBIs in 20 at-bats spread over five games. Stole his first base since May 26.

9. Jared Oliva • OF • 23 B/T: R/R Ht/Wt: 6-2, 203 • Altoona

Might’ve had the best week of any Pirates prospect — hitting .588, posting an OPS of 1.314 and stealing seven bases over five games. Hitting .458 over his last 14.

10. Steven Jennings • P • 20 B/T: R/R • Ht/Wt: 6-2, 175 • Greensboro

Pitched five innings and allowed an earned run on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Has allowed one or no earned runs in four of his past six starts.
