Francisco Cervelli hit in jaw, exits Pirates-Cubs game

CHICAGO — Francisco Cervelli exited Saturday’s game between the Pirates and Cubs at Wrigley Field after taking a foul tip off the left side of his jaw. The move was precautionary, a Pirates spokesman said.

Cervelli took a breather in the third inning after a foul tip bounced off his shoulder and hit his jaw. He remained in the game but was visited later in the inning by manager Clint Hurdle and head athletic trainer Bryan Housand.

After Cervelli grounded out in the top of the fourth, Elias Diaz replaced him behind the plate in the bottom of the fourth.

Following the game, director of sports medicine Todd Tomcyzk said Cervelli was still being examined by the team physician and medical staff. As part of those examinations, Cervelli, who has had concussion issues in the past, would be evaluated for concussion symptoms.

"Any time a player gets hit in that region, of course we're always having serial exams for concussion-like symptoms," Tomcyzk said.
