Starling Marte, who is on the 10-day disabled list with a right oblique strain, could be activated for Saturday’s Pirates game, manager Clint Hurdle said.
Marte took batting practice before Friday’s game. He injured his oblique on a swing in the first inning of a game against the Chicago White Sox May 15.
“Marte’s going through full-blown workout activity today,” Hurdle said. “He went through a schedule yesterday. Even with the day game he got some things done — hit off velocity, hit spin. He’s run the bases. ... We’ll see where he comes in, how he comes in tomorrow. We anticipate right now that there’s going to be an opportunity that he could possibly be put back on tomorrow on the roster if there’s no setbacks today.”
Hurdle did not indicate what the Pirates’ corresponding roster move would be. Austin Meadows has played center field in Marte’s absence.
Prospect back at Pirate City
Pirates minor leaguer Ji-hwan Bae, who went to his native South Korea to address allegations of domestic violence by a former girlfriend, returned to Pirate City on Monday, John Dreker of Pirates Prospect reported. According to MLB regulations, Bae is permitted to participate in baseball activities during the review process, a Pirates spokesman said.
