TORONTO — On Saturday, infielder Phil Gosselin was claimed by the Texas Rangers, ending his brief and forgettable tenure with the Pirates.
Gosselin, 28, was acquired in February from the Arizona Diamondbacks for minor leaguer Frank Duncan. Pirates management hoped he could provide bench depth, as he was a proven pinch-hitter with a .283 batting average in 501 Major League plate appearances.
Expectations did not match reality. Gosselin appeared in only 28 games for the Pirates and was 6 for 40 (.150) with one extra-base hit. He was optioned twice to Class AAA Indianapolis, where he batted .266 with a .640 OPS.
