COLUMBUS, Ohio — Penguins defenseman Brian Dumoulin didn’t finish Friday’s 7-6 preseason loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena because of an upper-body injury.
Dumoulin’s final shift concluded at 17:40 of the second period, and he did not return for the third.
“I haven’t gotten the report at this point, but right now, he’ll be evaluated when we get back,” Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said. “It’s an upper-body injury. We’ll have more information probably [Saturday].”
Dumoulin has become perhaps the Penguins’ steadiest defenseman, producing career-highs of five goals and 18 points in 2017-18. He averaged 20:37 of ice time per game, second only to partner Kris Letang (25:20).
Dumoulin's absence would be nothing short of huge if it’s anything significant. The Penguins are off Saturday. Their schedule for Sunday and the rest of the week has not yet been announced.
Whatever they do, there is some time before Thursday’s season-opener should Dumoulin require rest.
