Jason Mackey's Penguins chat transcript: 3.1.18

Jason Mackey's Penguins chat transcript: 3.1.18

John L: Jason did the Pens give up too much future for Brassard? And what are your thoughts on Lindberg and Dunn? Are they significant future contributors? Thanks
Jason Mackey: OK, folks. Let's do this. Here to answer your questions. ... No, I don't think they did. You have to give to get, No. 1. And Vegas is picking up 40 percent of his salary; they actually saved money. Have never seen either play. Will reserve judgement until then, but there aren't many jobs open right now with the NHL club.

Guest: Jason, the team went all in to get Brassard so they could run four scoring lines. And yet Sullivan continues to play a fourth line with Kuhnackl and Rowney together and then barely plays them. Those two should never be on the ice at the same time. What is going on with his lineups? Why does think having two slow PK shotblockers with limited offense on the ice at the same time is a great idea? Sheary, anybody with some skill, should occupy one spot on that fourth line, or what's the point in getting Brassard. Agree?
Jason Mackey: No, I don't. Sheary needs to be with skilled players. Simple as that. He offers nothing in a fourth-line role. As for 34/37 ... I get what you're saying. I would be tempted to bring up Sprong and give him another shot, but it's useless for me to think that because I don't think that's what Sully wants to do. In fact, I know that's not what Sully wants to do. Best case: Their top three lines score enough that it doesn't matter if the fourth line is an offensive graveyard.

Guest: Phil appears to have been injured a couple games ago and played really poorly last game as he floated around the ice. If he's not going to be effective out there, why doesn't he sit a few games? Call up Simon or Sprong
Jason Mackey: Because Phil has earned the right to play through what's bugging him. It would hardly be the first game where Phil floated around the case. He's still a difference-maker.

Guest: Watching the last six weeks or so, I can't for the life of me understand why Sprong hasn't been called up again. Simon got ample opportunity of sucking for so long before he was sent back down. Sheary has not been playing any better than Sprong did and he still plays. Do you really think is about Rutherford's comment that Sprong has to work on his overall game (so does Simon and Sheary btw), or do you think it's because Sullivan and perhaps others on the team think Sprong is a jerk, for lack of an appropriate publishable word, and want to teach him a lesson or something?
Jason Mackey: Sprong could be the biggest jerk going. If he helps them win, you can deal with it. He would only do so much. He's an incomplete player. I think that's what bothers Sully more than anything. Sprong isn't good away from the puck. He's better, but still below average. They want more of a complete player before they do anything.

Guest: Worried about Murray. You can call the concussion a freak accident or whatever you will, but this guy has an inordinate amount of "freak" injuries. Is anyone inside the organization truly worried about his fragility? It's clear that the team's going nowhere if it has to play Jarry or DeSmith in the playoffs.
Jason Mackey: I'm worried, too. He's had a few concussions and a decent run of injuries where I think it's fair to wonder about all this stuff. Do I think he's injury prone? No. These aren't "brittle" injuries. But they have happened, and they need to stop happening. Most of all, because he's a good person, I want Matt's head to be OK.

Dan: Really impressed by New Jersey last night ! I really don’t think Penguin fans realized what a good GM Ray Shero is...thoughts !
Jason Mackey: I think Pens fans should realize how good Ray is, and a lot do. But maybe not enough. What he's done in Jersey has been really, really impressive. They're so fast. Feels like a potential playoff opponent, no?

copall: Once again, giving up odd man rushes has crept back into Pittsburgh's game. They are on some kind of strange cycle (Was there a full moon this past week?). Pens seem to play with a little more abandon when things are going well, get into a defensive rut, then snap out of it. I'm not too worried. How about you?
Jason Mackey: They're 17-6-1 since Jan. 1. You know how many teams would kill for those problems? They play 82 games. Relax.

copall: I like Hornqvist. He and his game are old school Black and Gold. But I was surprised the Pens signed him for 5 years at 5.3 mil per year. Aren't they going to have a hard time signing their RFA after the season? Think they will have to get rid of some salaries to sign guys like Rust. Will they depend on salary cap going up?
Jason Mackey: Some. But they'll be OK. They might sign Rust to a long-term extension, but they don't have to. The design of the system enables cost control. Plus, the way I see it, Hornqvist wasn't optional. That's a very fair contract, much less than he would've made on July 1. If you can do it, shoot, you figure out the rest later, in my opinion.

Guest: Is "Go To Heaven" the worst Grateful Dead album and does it have the worst album cover art? Thanks, Jason!
Jason Mackey: I don't listen to the "albums." Only the shows.

Guest: Why doesn't Cincinnati have an NHL team?
Jason Mackey: Nothing so good and so fun should allowed to be so close to Vontaze Burfict.

stats: When you need stats for an article, what source do you use? A database the PG subscribes to or a regular site online for free?
Jason Mackey: A few things. Naturalstattrick.com. Hockey-reference.com. NHL.com. Corsica.hockey. ... Those are my top four.

Jake Guentzel takes a wrist shot during drills Feb. 12 at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry.

Andrea: Hi Jason, do you think the management see Andrey Pedan as a Hunwick alternative this season? It seems he his having a very good season in WBS.
Jason Mackey: Not ideally, no. If Hunwick is hurt, they probably use Chad Ruhwedel. They like Pedan, trust me, but they like Ruhwedel more given he played at least a few playoff games last year. Could move Oleksiak to the left side, I'd imagine.

DeadHead: Jason, I'm betting you are in Boston and I'm betting that you downloaded The Dead Boston show from 4-2-73 to get you in the Boston state of mind, my friend. If not, what Dead show from Boston are you tuning into???
Jason Mackey: Actually, none. Shame on me. Was listening to some other stuff -- Clarks, Petty, Isbell and Kenny Wayne Shepherd -- and was away from the Dead. Sorry.

1233: Help settle a bet, who is better RIGHT NOW - Kucherov or Ovechkin?
Jason Mackey: Kucherov.

PENS 1: Is Taylor Hall quietly becoming the future face of the NHL? Also, what historic NHL player who you never got to see play in person would you most like to see play in person if you had a time machine and could go back in time and see him play in person? Thank you!
Jason Mackey: I think that's a little much. I think he's a good player, but two-third of the league's fanbases -- maybe more -- couldn't pick him out of a lineup. Gordie Howe. Easy.

=: What is Phil Kessel's playing weight? Is he too heavy for today's game? The NHL is a fast man's game now!
Jason Mackey: Phil Kessel is one of the fastest players on the team, but nice try.

USA: Manon Rheaume - Can you share some thoughts on this groundbreaking athlete and will there ever FINALLY be a female player in a regular SEASON NHL game? When I see the WOmen's Olympic ladies game, I know that at least one or two of those players could break the glass (ice) ceiling and compete with the big boys of the NHL. Thoughts?
Jason Mackey: I think the USA women's hockey team is amazing. Really special. I'm sure they could compete. Can't say I know a ton about Rheaume, though, other than I had one of her cards back in the day.

Timbo: If Jerry Garcia were alive today, do you think you'd reach out to him and let him know that a Dead Head (you) had made his way into the corporate mainstream and managed to hold down a job working for the man at a corporate newspaper? Some might think you a sellout, but I think it is amazing that in the course of 50 years Dead Heads have gone from being freaky untouchables to mainstream, straight shooting members of society like you. Who would have guessed back in the 70s that Dead Members would have retirement plans and credit cards!!!!! Well done, Jason. You provide hope for the rest of us. And good reporting!
Jason Mackey: Thanks, Timbo. Appreciate that. Wouldn't reach out to Jerry. Not in that sense, anyway. And I feel like if Jerry were available, he'd be cool with newspapers and writing and the important role it all plays nowadays. What I know of Jerry is that making judgements on others wasn't really his thing.

three peet: Do the Penguins have the legs to go for another deep playoff run and DARE I SAY another Stanley Cup title?
Jason Mackey: Yes, I don't think legs are an issue at all right now.

NHL OVERALL: What team - if you had to guess- will rep the West in the Cup Finals?
Jason Mackey: I'm going Vegas, baby!

team fan since 81: Jason, this year's Pens have provided us with some choice nuggs in terms of shooting and pass selection. I've been pleased with their stamina in the face of what must be exhaustion. I think that at times the coaching has been trippy, but the effort from this team has been far out and majorly groovy. I often compare this team to the Dead (like you probably do) and this season the song Uncle John's Band I think best sums up the season to this point. Thoughts? Thanks for the great work, JM!
Jason Mackey: I'm not sure I understand the point you're making, but you included a Grateful Dead reference so I'm cool with it.

Guest: What sites are you gonna try to see while in Historical Boston? Fenway Park, Franklin's Home, Liberty Bell, etc. Enjoy the trip!
Jason Mackey: I took a tour of Fenway the other day. It was incredible. This afternoon I'm (hopefully) taking a tour of my hotel room bed.

guest: Was happy for Reaves that he got traded. He never really got a chance here and seems like a good guy that deserved better.
Jason Mackey: Agree with that. Never understood why they didn't find a larger role for him.

Guest: Jason, you've revealed in here a few times that you love drinking coffee while writing your articles. What is the best coffee place you've ever gone to?
Jason Mackey: Fancy: Kofe in Vancouver, actually with Olli Maatta. Every day: I'm a Timmy's diehard.

USA: Any good restaurants you can recommend in Philadelphia?
Jason Mackey: They have good restaurants in Philadelphia?

James: Love the Brasard deal and how GMJR goes all in, but didn't they need to upgrade the defenceman more? They seem really vulnerable without Cole
Jason Mackey: I think we need to wait and see on Hunwick. If he's playing the left side, I'm much more OK with it than if he was playing the right. It's too soon to make any sort of snap judgements with him and Oleksiak.

Ron: Don't the Penguins look a lot like the Steelers now -- all offense and no defense? I don't understand how Rutherford thinks that's a recipe for success in the playoffs. It's defense that wins championships, especially since the officials tend not to call many penalties in the playoffs.
Jason Mackey: We're talking about two games, Ron. Without their No. 1 goalie. I think their defense will be just fine. They've gotten a little loose with how they do things. I don't think it's a gigantic cause for concern at this point.

HB: Were you at the Monday practice and did you notice what might of caused ZARs injury?
Jason Mackey: I was, but I haven't a clue. He might've been trying to battle through it. We don't know for sure that it happened Monday.

Sidney Cup 87: Jason, if the Pens can get back to rolling 4 lines (instead of 3, playing catch up) IMO they can not play both 37 & 34 on the wings. I Kno it's a PK thing but why has Sully gone away from 4 lines that can score? When 62,15,59,17 are all capable PK guys?
Jason Mackey: True. But who takes draws, No. 1? Also, you may disagree, but Sully wants a right-handed faceoff option. There's Rowney. I agree that they need more offense from the fourth line, but there are only so many options.

HB: Do you think a couple games off will help sheary find his groove?
Jason Mackey: Yeah, I'm kind of surprised they haven't gone the healthy scratch route. He's responded well to it in the past.

HB: Is this a big game for the pens just to see how they stack up against another cup favorite?
Jason Mackey: It's a big game for the Pens because they need to snap a two-game losing streak and start playing better before this snowballs. It only happens to be against a really good team.

Pens4Life: Regarding injury reports, is the ambiguity of them something the player’s union wanted? If so, why? When it’s reported that ZAR is out with an “upper body injury,’ why are there never specifics like in other sports?
Jason Mackey: Nobody around the NHL feels a need for actual information. From Bettman on down. That includes the NHLPA. It's a shame. And stupid. They think it leads to targeting.

Pens4Life: How come Mario never grants media interviews? Have you ever attempted to talk with him?
Jason Mackey: I have. They have all been denied. He likes to stay out of the spotlight. That's the explanation I've gotten. Although he has spoken for things such as the Kevin Stevens special on Sportsnet.

Pens4Life: More bad PR for a Steeler regarding social media use. We never hear this from the Pens. Do the powers-at-be discourage players from acting up in that way, or is there a policy governing use among players?
Jason Mackey: It's just different in hockey culture. They barely use it. And when they do, it's never bad. ... I think they talk to the guys, but hockey players and football players are just different types of people. That's not a racist comment, either. Please don't take it that way. There's just more of a fall-in-line mindset with hockey players.

New UK fan: Hi Jason
Jason Mackey: Hello, there.

HB: So hornqvists extension what does that mean for Bryan rust can we resign him he’s by far the most versatile winger?
Jason Mackey: He's an RFA. He'll be back. When it comes time for a long-term extension, they'll do that, too. They love him.

Guest: What is the GREATEST HOCKEY MOVIE OF ALL TIME?
Jason Mackey: Most everyone would say Slapshot. I'm going Mighty Ducks. I'm sure I'll get crushed, but I don't care. I love 'em. Honorable mention: Miracle and Mystery Alaska.

news: Mackey, do you hope to spend the rest of your career at the Post Gazette? Also, who is the sports editor there now? Did Sanserino leave?
Jason Mackey: Sanserino did leave. It's Tyler Batiste. To answer the first part: Yes. I've hopped around a little. I'm done with that crap. I'm from Pittsburgh, which means I'm not trying to get anywhere else. The P-G is so, so good to us, and I'm proud to be part of what we're building. You're stuck with me, assuming they don't toss me out on the street.

New UK fan: Hi Jason. New Penguins fan here in the UK (been a Steelers fan for years), and have a couple of newbie questions if i may - 1. Reading all the NHL trade talks it seems to me as if draft picks are not seen as valuable as in the NFL -is that true? If so, why is that? 2. Why are so many games late evening? Not great for us here but also even in the US? thanks!
Jason Mackey: Hockey's an evening sport. Don't know why. Just always been that way. ... Hockey players come from all sorts of feeder systems -- junior, overseas and NCAA. First-round picks panning out is less certain in the NHL and NFL. I think that's why you see more first-round picks moved.

New UK FAN: Sorry Jason another one! How close were we to getting Graubner (?) from the Rangers? He looked very good and dangerous the other night... Ta
Jason Mackey: They tried. Rangers wanted a defensive prospect that we didn't have. So, again, close in the sense that we wanted him. But never serious enough because of the assets involved.

Guest: Does the NHL have a Combine like the NFL?
Jason Mackey: It does. It's usually in Buffalo.

hockey: Mackey, has being a father impacted your reporting style? I know several prominent journalists who said that they radically changed their prose and approach to stories after becoming fathers. Thoughts?
Jason Mackey: I don't think so. Maybe it's made me more compassionate, but I tried to be that before. I think it makes you work more efficiently than maybe you did before.

Guest: When, if ever, will Pedan get a look? If for no other reason to see what he can bring to the defense.
Jason Mackey: They'd probably have to have two guys get hurt. There's just not a job for him right now.

Guest: JR is putting an incredible amount of faith in a pretty mediocre defense, is he hoping to win playoff games 6-5?
Jason Mackey: I think GMJR was limited in what he could do. Would Jordie Benn really have made a huge difference? I get some of the concerns over Hunwick, but we're talking about a third pair here, people. The lines they're defending aren't exactly the best of the best. Plus, the sample size of Hunwick-Oleksiak still has been relatively small.

RandomHockeyGuy: Very interested to see Carter Rowney's usage tonight. He played only 4 minutes against NJ, very little PK time, and took zero face-offs. If that type of usage continues, I would much rather see Rust moved to 4th line, as Rust and Kuhnhackl had some good chemistry with Dad 2 years ago. Call up Sprong and stick him with Sid. The kid is a point per game player in the AHL, and has been much better at setting up players since his return to the AHL. It's not like he's down there with 40 games played and 10 points.
Jason Mackey: Agreed. I'm curious how the fourth line pans out. It needs to give the Penguins something. Even if it's hitting and energy. What they did Tuesday won't work. They need to generate more. ... If it doesn't, I think you easily could see Sprong up and Rust on the fourth line to try and help it.

KJ: The Pens received a 3rd rd draft pick from Ottawa in the Brassard deal which, of course, included Cole. The Sens flipped Cole for a 3rd from CBJ. Why not simply allow Ott to keep their (better) 3rd rounder and retain Cole for the playoff run? The Pens had $2.02M (prorated, per CapFriendly) in salary cap available at the deadline. The difference in Cole's salary and available cap space was $80K, which it would seem the Pens would've been able to maneuver around. Having Cole in the lineup would've given them a better chance of winning again than does Hunwick.
Jason Mackey: Because you're looking at this in hindsight. What if Ottawa got a second for Cole? Then it's a completely different ballgame.

Jeff: Where do you see Aston-Reese in the lineup after he heals up, realistically? He had some good games before the trade deadline, but I imagine he rotates with Kuhnhackl or Rowney on the 4th.
Jason Mackey: I don't think he'll be back by the end of the regular season. And if he is, I have a tough time seeing him work his way back into the top 12.

Ralph: Why does Sully keep playing Kuhnhackl and Rowney? We need 4 scoring lines, Call Simon and Sprong up so we can have 4 lines that can score.
Jason Mackey: Seems to be a lot of fan angst over this. I get it. Sully likes those two. But the fourth line needs to score. If they don't tonight, or at least don't generate, I think it's reasonable for Sully to make a move.

Guest: Any reason why DeSmith is presumably getting the nod ahead of Jarry when they both lost their last games played? Does Sully prefer the way DeSmith plays or is he just going with who he thinks has the best chance at keeping goals out at this point? I just feel like their might be some tension between Jarry and some of the management based on how he's been treated his season.
Jason Mackey: No tension with Jarry, trust me. I think they think -- and agree -- that DeSmith has played better of late. Simple as that. He was decent against Jersey Tuesday. Sure wasn't the reason they lost.

CS: Hey, Jason! University journalism instructor here, and I have a lot of students who want to be hockey reporters/callers. Any advice you'd be able to give 'em? Most unexpected awesome thing about reporting on the Penguins? Or maybe something that's a lot harder/not what you expected?
Jason Mackey: It's very hard. It's supposed to be hard. That's what I would tell your kids: Don't expect to have much of a personal life for a while, don't expect to make a lot of money, the players become much less cool when you do this. ... But hopefully you love writing and telling stories and believe in the greater good of journalism. (Obviously sports is a little different.)

Ewok to Remember : With Reaves gone, is the club expecting Oleksiak to play the hard hitting, "star protector" role the rest of the season?
Jason Mackey: A little bit, but not a ton. They just want him to play his game. Facts are facts, though, and he's probably the only fighter they have. If something goes down, he has to step up.

Ewok to Remember : Any update on ZAR's injury?
Jason Mackey: He's out longer-term with an upper-body injury. That's what we know.

Paul: With ZAR out who do you see being recalled once the Murr is ready to go? Simon? Sprong?
Jason Mackey: I think it's independent of Murray, and I think it's Sprong's turn.

Chuck_in_D.C.: Hoping to get question in early... Has anyone ever thought of a Sumo wrestler (600+ lbs.) as a goalie? These athletes are quick and would take up a lot of the net.
Jason Mackey: It's an interesting premise, Chuck, but there's much more to goaltending than taking up space.

Stewsey: Thoughts on trying Sprong with Brassard?
Jason Mackey: I think we should wait one game before freaking out over Brassard-Kessel. Give it some time.

Ewok to Remember : How many Sheary performances like Tuesday's will it take for Sullivan to scratch him in order to tryout one of the young guys on the third line?
Jason Mackey: I think we're flirting with it. Sullivan has tried to spark him. Hasn't happened. If he's going to get those minutes, he has to do something with them. Simple as that. I think we're close to healthy scratch territory.

Paul: I know we typically like 8-D, with Cole gone i would like to see Pedan get a shot. Any insight who would be the most likely call-up?
Jason Mackey: The third Pedan question. When did he become the savior here? ... It's probably Pedan, but I'm not sure he'd bring with him a 2-0 goal, just FYI.

Mark: The recent winning streak got Pens in “fire-wagon mode”—which was unforgivingly doused by NJ. We know they can play the patient game—how does Sullivan get them back to it?
Jason Mackey: Have to reinforce puck management. Has been lacking the past couple. Take care of it, make Boston play 200 feet. Devils looked fast Tuesday because the Penguins allowed it. Not only that, they helped it.

Ewok to Remember : Can you give a quick explanation of the whole Jarry to ahl for ahl eligibility thing?
Jason Mackey: You have to be on the AHL roster by a certain date, on a certain date, to be eligible for the playoffs.

Basil: Hi. 1st line: Brass-Sid-Sheary. Y/N?
Jason Mackey: No.

Ewok to Remember : Robocop 3 or Terminator 4? If you had to choose...
Jason Mackey: A nap.

8th D & Moving up: Any chance a couple of WBS' top D get a longer trial run at the NHL level this month? The team seems receptive to promoting forwards. Why not the D?
Jason Mackey: Andrey Pedan, question No. 4. ... Because -- obviously you guys and gals disagree -- the Penguins like their top-six on defense. They don't feel there's a need. Please don't shoot the messenger here.

FR: What changes do you think Sullivan will make to the four lines? Brassard with Sheahan and Kessel looked to be gathering steam midway through the game. Sheary was nonexistent as well as the 4th line during the game.
Jason Mackey: I think you need to play Sheary with Sid and Guentzel. It's where he has the most value. Keep Geno's line together. I'd go Rust with Kessel and Brassard and say some prayers on the fourth line.

Joe G: Jason, Is Oleksiak signed for next year? If Not, do you think the Pens will attempt to keep him? He's our only physical D man and "Enforcer," for lack of a better term
Jason Mackey: He's an RFA, and yes, the Penguins will keep him. They like him quite a bit.

Jason: Pens defense looks shaky as can be....What is the deal with Conner Sheary playing so lousy? He cannot even keep a puck on His stick..
Jason Mackey: He's in a funk. That happens when players are struggling. When they keep it, they're generally feeling it. I'm surprised they haven't tried to give him a different look at this thing with a night off.

Eric: If you were a betting man, who would you place your money on right now to win the cup?
Jason Mackey: Tampa. Followed closely by Pittsburgh. But I'm not a betting man.

TK: Would you split up Hunwich/Oleksiak?
Jason Mackey: I would not. I would try to properly manage their minutes. Leave the top-four as is.

Coach: Who is the best in-game strategist: Tomlin, Sullivan or Hurdle?
Jason Mackey: Interesting question. Somewhat loaded, though, because Sullivan has the most power. But I'm going Sully anyway. Dude's won the past two Cups. Can't argue with that.

Avi: Hey Jason, would you explain what constitutes a legal vs. non-legal face-off?
Jason Mackey: Several things, from something as early as who puts their stick down first to using one's feet. Have to follow the order and keep your distance.

Guest: Will the Pens have enough cap room to sign Rust this offseason? What sort of contract do you think he will demand?
Jason Mackey: Yes, they will. The RFA deal won't be a big thing. He'll get a long-term extension. Thinking maybe in the $3.5 million range? Just spit-balling here.

Coach: Would Sully think Ovechkin is a complete player? Kessel? This Sprong standard seems silly. I can see applying it to guys like Rust who aren't pure scorers, but doesn't Sprong's absence defy hockey logic?
Jason Mackey: If Sprong had a 30-goal season on his resume, you can leave with it. He doesn't. And even his offense came and went. He hasn't been good enough to make the coaching staff overlook the other stuff. Kessel has. There's the difference.

Paul: Who is our 8th defensemen now?
Jason Mackey: Probably Andrey Pedan, the star of this chat.

Nate: Do you think the Pens would have had the same success if they drafted Ovechkin instead of Malkin? If I remember correctly the Pens had a shot at the #1 pick but wound up with #2 that year.
Jason Mackey: It's hardly a consolation prize. I think they would have had success. It's impossible to say whether Ovechkin and Crosby would've meshed the way Malkin has with Sid, but I don't think they would've been bad by any stretch.

Paul: Does Jooris come up once Murray is healthy?
Jason Mackey: Possibly. Depends on how he's playing and the need. But it isn't totally tied to Murray. Or at all, really.

Guest: "FUTURE FACE OF THE NHL" No one thinks Taylor Hall is the face of the league now, but think about in a few years if he continues on this path? Thoughts?
Jason Mackey: No, I don't think so. He'll be an elite player, sure, but I just don't see him in the Sid/McDavid/Matthews mold. Sorry.

Guest: Who do you see as the better option in net while Murray is out? What makes you lean to DeSmith or Jarry?
Jason Mackey: Whoever is playing better, honestly. Not being glib here. I thought Casey was good enough Tuesday. I understand coming back with him. If he stinks, then you go to Jarry. Play the hot hand and don't overthink it.

Bob Sackamono: Jason! Why no answer on trade deadline day?? I was on edge why you did not get the black bean soup? You left me hanging.....waaaay more important then trade stuff that day
Jason Mackey: Sorry, Bob.

Dolemite: Why doesn't Sheary see time on the PK? His speed would seem to be an asset there.
Jason Mackey: There's more to it than speed. Shot-blocking. Reads. He doesn't have a long reach. One of the shortest, actually.

Guest: After the video the pens account posted this week I have to ask, and you may not know, but is Sid ticklish? It seemed like he very much so is!
Jason Mackey: How the heck would I know that?

Bob Sackamono: When should you charge your electric toothbrush? When you can't pay cash.
Jason Mackey: Thanks, Bob. I'll remember that.

Guest: Why are you dissing Philly restaraunts?!?!?!?!!? Trying to give the Flyers more Bulletin Board Material?
Jason Mackey: If my answer in a chat gives them bulletin board material, they're in real trouble.

max: do you think we lost too much toughness with the loss of Cole and Reaves?
Jason Mackey: I don't. But I don't think the Penguins gained enough speed or offense in Reaves' spot on the fourth line. That, to me, is the bigger problem.

?: Hey, what is this story about you appearing in a Steven Seagel movie back in the 80s? My buddy told me you were in a scene or two. True?
Jason Mackey: False.

Guest: I don’t have a “the athletic” account (I much prefer your writing Jason!) but there was an article on there that I saw some comments pertaining to and was curious if you knew the answers. It was in regards to Cullen eating dairy and gluten free. Some commenters said he was inspired by Crosby to eat this way and that a bunch of the penguins eat this way now. Is there any truth to that? If a bunch do follow this diet, do you know who? Also very curious what this means in relation to Jeff Zatkoff’s article from the 2016 playoffs where he pondered getting dessert and said, essentially, Crosby never denies himself a dessert. I know from experience it’s hard to find diary and gluten free dessert items!
Jason Mackey: I believe Michael Russo wrote something on Cullen's diet. I think I remember it being some habits, not the entire thing, that Cullen picked up from Sid. I know Crosby loves his sweets.

Pens lover: Any chance we see Michael Leighton in net When he is off the injury list?
Jason Mackey: No, I don't think so. Both Jarry and DeSmith are better options.

Guest: Is Sheary actually dating Sullivan's niece? Several people were talking about this on twitter. Didn't know if you could confirm. Thanks Mackey!
Jason Mackey: He's married to Sullivan's niece, I believe. You can Google it.

soma: is andy brown still available to play goal
Jason Mackey: No.

Jason: Are the Pens allowed to look at some kind of surprise player other than the AHL or Sprong and some them to a 2 way contract after the trade deadline in different leagues anywhere?
Jason Mackey: I have zero clue what you're asking here. A surprise player? Like behind door No. 2?

Coach: Reporters aren't permitted to disclose what they see during certain NFL practices. Do similar strange rules apply to observing NHL "closed" practices, if there even are such occasions?
Jason Mackey: No. NHL practices are 100 percent open to being reported on. Much different than football.

Someone's Mama: I was at the game in Wilkes-Barre this past Sunday. Sprong was skating on the 3rd line and on the 2nd PP. You still think we'll see him in Pittsburgh again this season?
Jason Mackey: I do. I think they'll see how he responded to his last shot. I also think he can score He's gone through stretches where he has, but he has the offensive ability. No doubt about that.

soma: with all of todays bs about everything - i am supprised nhl aligns itself with movie slap shot
Jason Mackey: It's a classic. Can't we just appreciate that?

Rick: Jason, who is the next D man up after Ruhlwedel, if needed? Sorry you don't have to answer anymore 3C questions.
Jason Mackey: I'm not. My guess would be Pedan, who's making his sixth appearance in this chat.

Squish the Pens: Last time pens lost 3 in a row..do Pens really have a chance against powerhouse Bruins?
Jason Mackey: Yes, they do. I think they get back to it tonight. They're a much different team now than they were in mid-December.

guest: NJ looked really scary both times we have played them now (can't believe I am saying that). Would that be the team you would least like to see if the playoffs now?
Jason Mackey: Team I'd least like to see is Tampa, hands down. But the Jersey matchups haven't been great. I do think there's a concern there. Jersey is really good. And fast. Few teams can skate with the Penguins. Devils are one of them.

Tom K.: Would you guess that ZAR is month to month with the UBI?
Jason Mackey: He's out for a while. I know that.

TK: There seems to be a disconnect between Sprong and the organization. Do you think he might request a trade like Jonathan Drouin did with TB a couple years ago?
Jason Mackey: There seems to be a disconnect? On what are you basing that? A young player learning what it takes to play in the NHL? Don't think Sprong's the first to experience that.

FR: Buffalo's got a spirit! Talking proud! Talking proud!
Jason Mackey: Hi, Joe.

Rory : Would you remove Jake from Sid's line, knowing that Sid can carry the uneven weight of producing with any player. Put him back with Phil.
Jason Mackey: No. I would try to get Sid and the Kids going, as I wrote in my 20 Thoughts this week. Best thing for everyone involved.

Pens lover: Do you think we will see Michael Leighton anytime soon if Matt continues to be out, that is when he is off the injury list
Jason Mackey: Not unless Jarry and DeSmith also get hurt.

dave: Why isn't Ruhwedel playing? I think he's been good when he's been given a chance to play.
Jason Mackey: Fair question. I'm surprised they haven't tried to get him a game just to keep him fresh.

me: Do you think Cole's openness with the media really played a role in his exit? If so, that seems awfully short-sighted on Sullivan's part.
Jason Mackey: No. I think Cole was an option for Rutherford. It's how he could make the Brassard deal work. And the payoff was greater than losing Cole. Cole's openness with the media chaffed Sullivan, but not enough for the Penguins to trade Cole.

Guest: Do the players on the team laugh at Phil, or with Phil? They've made comments about him being 'funny without trying to be' that make me wonder if he's the butt of the joke?
Jason Mackey: Oh, absolutely with Phil. They think he's hilarious.

me: Other than Matt Cullen, is there anyone else the Pens tried to get at the deadline but couldn't?
Jason Mackey: Those are always dicey. There are, but the names aren't going to surface for a variety of reasons.

guest: Do you think Cullen has any regrets about not coming back to Pittsburgh given he was open to being traded here?
Jason Mackey: He would've welcomed it, but he's also happy in Minny. Doesn't matter because the Wild refused to trade him.

Guest : I think sheary has not been the same since the HQ hit last year. He is playing with eggs in his pocket and afraid to break any.
Jason Mackey: Maybe you discovered the problem. I would hate to play with eggs in my pocket. Shells would get everywhere. Would stink, too.

guest: How close are the Pens to salary cap now? Cole doesn't make that much so surprised they could not keep him.
Jason Mackey: They're about $2 million (pro-rated) away, I believe.

Woppo: Jason, did you see the Pawn Stars episode with MAF? They never explained how the guy got Fleury's expansion sweater in the first place. Any insight?
Jason Mackey: Sorry, I did not see it.

Guest: As a disc golfer, it’s awesome to see DeSmith is an avid player. Do any other players have an active interest in another sport?
Jason Mackey: Tom Kuhnhackl is very into soccer. Many of them love the NFL. Murray loves the Olympics.

Andrey Pedan: Did I miss anything?
Jason Mackey: The star of the show is here!

FR: Do you think Sullivan will make any changes with the lines for tonight's game in Boston? Moving Sheary to Sid's line and Rust to the 3rd Line as you mentioned?
Jason Mackey: I think he'll consider doing that, yeah. I could also see him tweaking the fourth line.

Pens lover: Waiting for my question about Michael Leighton!
Jason Mackey: I've gotten two. He's not an option.

Dan: College free agent time soon...give Billy G a call and get some information
Jason Mackey: You got it. Can I have a day off first?

FR: Who would you like to see on the 4th line to replace the offense and speed with Reaves gone?
Jason Mackey: For now, Rust. Maybe for good. Not a punishment. He just brings something there where others don't, and they could use Sprong or Simon in the top nine.

Pens lover: Conor is getting married later this year to Jordan sullivan
Jason Mackey: Great. Now that we got that important thing settled.

Sean: Any chance the pens look at any WBS d-men to call up? Pedan would be pretty good
Jason Mackey: Seventh heaven!

Justin T: Ever see me doing Harlem River Blues with your boy Isbell on Letterman? If not, check it out sometime
Jason Mackey: I have not, but I need to. I love that song, and your stuff.

Jason: Can they find possible players in other leagues other than the NHL or AHL that would help them and sign them to a 2 way contract after the trade deadline?
Jason Mackey: That's a good question, Jason. It's definitely a non-traditional route. Let me check with GMJR and get back to you. I honestly don't know.

Mike in Kennedy: Measured by his past brilliance, how would you rate Crosby's overall game this season and how would you rate his play over the last month or so?
Jason Mackey: I think he needs some consistent linemates, one. But I think he's been right there. The playmaking, the wall play, the holding onto the puck, all there. No concerns with Sid. Maybe a little more goal-scoring, but he's not a 40-goal scorer anymore, I don't think.

Guest : Any chance seeing Jooris with sheahan on the 4th?
Jason Mackey: Yeah, I think that's an option they'll consider if the fourth line doesn't improve.

Andrey Pedan: What do I have to do to have the Pens organization throw a fan appreciation day centered around me?
Jason Mackey: And with that, I'm out. Thanks, folks. Enjoy the hockey game!
